Dominica hosts seventh regional CaribNOG meeting

ROSEAU - Regional and international technology experts are gathering in Dominica to address Caribbean technology challenges and to collaboratively derive solutions that are relevant to the region.


The Caribbean Network Operators Group, CaribNOG, is hosting its seventh regional meeting in the island’s capital city, Roseau, from April 28 to May 2.

CaribNOG is a forum for network technicians and technology professionals from across the region to share experiences and participate in expert-led, high-tech training exercises and hands-on technical workshops.

CARICOM: More Dialogue to Come on Martinique and Guadeloupe

Following Martinique Regional Council President Serge Letchimy’s historic visit to the CARICOM Heads of Government conference in St Vincent this year, CARICOM is continuing to explore the possibility of accepting Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guiana as associate members.

That was revealed this week by CARICOM Secretary General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, who said that CARICOM was “in the process of understanding various constitutional arrangements to allow for a dialogue in the not-too-distant future.”

Grenada, Netherlands Sign Agreements on Sustainable Development

Grenada and the Netherlands have signed a pair of memoranda of understanding on sustainable development.

The two agreements will see the provision of around $1.85 million USD to Grenada; the two countries will work together to attract an additional $1.85 million USD from Dutch private sector banks and businesses.

The agreements, which were signed in The Hague on Thursday by Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell, covered two areas: the “Blue Economy” and “Climate-Smart Agriculture.”

Call for CARICOM to Implement Consumer Protection Model Law

State Minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, has called on CARICOM member states to implement the Consumer Protection Model Law.

Mrs. Ffolkes-Abrahams said the legislation has been in the draft stage for “far too long.”

The Bill, which falls under Chapter eight of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, speaks to the need for the promotion and protection of consumer interests, in relation to the supply of goods.

Jamaica to Tax Bank Withdrawals

amaica’s government is planning a new measure that would impose a levy on withdrawals from banks.

Part of a revenue-raising scheme for a government that continues to be in a serious debt situation, the levy “will be chargeable on all withdrawals from deposit-taking institutions by way of electronic banking, point of sale transactions, cheques, automated banking machine (ABM), automated teller machine (ATM), or over the counter and internet transfers,” according to Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips.

Young People Urged to Take Up Reparation Struggle

Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, Professor Hilary Beckles, has charged young people across the Caribbean to take up the reparation struggle and carry on the conversation until the region has received justice.

“This subject is going to go forward and we are going to have justice only when young people step up and play their role,” Professor Beckles said.

BASSETERRE, St Kitts -- Sonia Boddie, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Youth Ambassador for the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, was a part of the youth contingent selected from across the region, to participate in the Pan-Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and Aids (PANCAP) Caribbean Consultation on Justice for All and Human Rights Agenda, convened under the theme “Advancing Justice for ALL and Human Rights in the Caribbean”, and held in Kingston Jamaica, from 10-11 April, 2014.

St Lucia Readies For First Shipment of PetroCaribe Fuel From Venezuela

St Lucia is readying for the first shipment of fuel under the island’s PetroCaribe agreement with Venezuela.

Officials from Venezuela’s PDVSA recently visited St Lucia to prepare the initial stages for the delivery, which follows St Lucia’s accession to the Venezuela-led ALBA Alliance and PetroCaribe.

Bouterse holds on to slender majority

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – The ruling MegaCombination coalition government has booted out one of its members after accusing it of playing “blackmail politics.”


Leader of Pertjajah Luhur (PL) party, Paul Somohardjo, confirmed that his organization, which had six seats, was no longer a member of the coalition, leaving President Desi Bouterse with just a slender one seat majority in the 51-member National Assembly.


Ministers belonging to the PL party have been asked to vacate their ministerial portfolios.
