Bahamas PM urges continued IDB support for the Caribbean

NASSAU, Bahamas, Feb 20, CMC – Bahamas Prime Minister Perry Christie says Caribbean countries are still suffering from the effects of the recession but were continuing to put in place measures to ensure their future socio-economic development.

Christie, who is also the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) chairman, told the opening of the opening of the Inter American Development Bank (IDB) Caribbean Governors Regional meeting here, that even as the region continues to emerge from the recession of 2008, “the scars of what we have already had to endure are glaringly evident”.

PM Harris Receives Best Wishes From Across The Region

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2015 (SKNIS): Prominent leaders across the region have extended congratulations to the new Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris.

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, congratulated Dr. Harris on his appointment and expressed her desires for working with him.

"I look forward to working with PM Harris, as the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) seek to advance regional integration and co-operation," Persad-Bissessar said.

Agriculture Minister Expects Growth To Continue

KINGSTON (JIS) -- Minister of Agriculture, Labour and Social Security, Hon. Derrick Kellier, is expecting the agricultural sector to continue its recovery during this quarter.

The Minister said that since 2012, the sector has experienced both “highs and lows,” beginning the recovery in 2013, which continued into the first two quarters of last year, with growth rates of 18 and 12.6 per cent, respectively.

Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, on Wednesday provided updates to the House of Assembly of The Bahamas on the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting which he will host next week.

Saint Lucia’s Private Sector to Get a Financial Boost from Caribbean Export

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) has awarded some €303,000 in financial assistance to seventeen (17) successful grant applications via the Direct Assistance Grant Scheme (DAGS) in Saint Lucia. Additionally a further three firms were awarded just over €29,000 in funding via a special call for proposals for food safety all , as part of the Regional Private Sector Development Programme (RPSDP) funded by the European Union under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).

CARIBBEAN-DEVELOPMENT-IDB seeking projects from Caribbean countries

WASHINGTON, Feb 18, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says it will provide up to seven million US dollars in grants to finance regional public goods (RPGs) projects in Latin America and the Caribbean this year.

It said the projects are aimed at resolving shared challenges and seizing opportunities for development through regional cooperation.

The IDB said that the initiative will provide up to seven million in grants to finance RPGs that are produced collectively by a minimum of three IDB borrowing-member countries.

Jamaica embarks on $54.4M measles prevention campaign

The Government is to spend $54.4 million to implement a Measles Prevention Campaign, which will run from February 16 to May 8, 2015.

Ministry of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson, made the announcement at a press briefing held on Monday, February 16 at Jamaica House.

He informed that the money will be used to procure additional doses of the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine as well as social mobilisation and communication.

Regional finance ministers meeting in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas, Feb 18, CMC – Caribbean finance ministers will meet here from Thursday for the Fourth Meeting of the Governors of the Caribbean Country Department of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The two-day meeting will discuss a number of issues including proposals for the organisational structure and capitalisation of the IDB’s private sector agency, and long-term financial policies of the Bank, including the long-term financial policy framework and the capital adequacy policy.

Grenada Mulls Geothermal Energy

Following moves by several nearby Caribbean islands, Grenada is exploring the potential of geothermal energy on the island.

Last year, the government signed a “support partnership framework” with the government of New Zealand, aiming to facilitate such exploration, and now that is moving forward.

The government said this week that Grenada had contracted Jacobs New Zealand limited to undertake the required studies and technical analyses on the project.
