Inequality Fuels HIV Epidemic in the Caribbean

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua, Feb 10 2015 (IPS) - At 49 years old, Edison Liburd has established himself as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most recognisable artists. But Liburd was not always in the spotlight. In fact, you could say he was a man in hiding.

“I have been infected with the HIV virus for about 24 years. I got my first HIV test done in February of 1993 at the Allen Pavilion Hospital in Manhattan New York,” Liburd told IPS.

“I can remember that day vividly. I felt like the earth had been removed from beneath me when I was handed the results of the test.”

World “dangerously unprepared” for pandemics warns bank chief

WASHINGTON D.C., United States, Wednesday February 11, 2015 – World Bank president Jim Yong Kim says the world is “dangerously unprepared” for future pandemics and lessons need to be learned from the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

Speaking at the inaugural Global Futures Lecture at Georgetown University in Washington, Mr Kim said it was vital that governments, aid agencies, corporations and insurance companies work together to prepare for future outbreaks.

Two Caribbean countries to benefit from fisheries project

(PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC) – Two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries stand to benefit from a project to establish ecosystem-based shrimp and groundfish fisheries management in the Guianas-Brazil Shelf.

The project is a joint investment by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Record tourist arrival and earnings for Caribbean – CTO

 More than 26 million visitors and over US$29 billion in earnings in 2014 ~

The Caribbean welcomed a record 26.3 million tourists in 2014, a 5.3 per cent rise over the previous year. These visitors spent  US$29.2 billion, itself a record.

The Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Richard Sealy, and the secretary general, Hugh Riley, along with the CTO’s director of research, Winfield Griffith, announced the record performance at a news conference streamed live to a global audience from the CTO headquarters today.
