PM Browne Expresses Solidarity with Government of Venezuela

JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda – 21 February 2015…..The administration of the Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, on Saturday expressed its solidarity with the people and Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela where an attempted military coup was hatched then discovered, and defeated. The Antigua and Barbuda Government and people stand with the democratically elected administration of President Nicolas Maduro.

New St. Kitts-Nevis Cabinet sworn in

St. Kitts-Nevis new Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris has announced a nine-member  Cabinet of Ministers  to administer the affairs of the twin-island Federation.

The full cabinet took the oath of office before Governor General Sir Edmund Lawrence  at a well-attended swearing-in ceremony at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, Sunday afternoon.

On his second day in office, new prime minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris gave this assurance during his first meeting with permanent secretaries and other senior officials today (February 20).
 

Haiti’s President leads ceremony to honour carnival accident victims

Haiti’s President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Evans Paul led thousands of mourners in the country’s main public park on Saturday to honour the 16 victims of the carnival float accident.

Reports say some mourners collapsed during the ceremony held at the Champ de Mars Park in Port-au-Prince.

Official reports say the accident on carnival Tuesday was caused when one of the carnival floats touched a power line, causing the crown to panic, and leading  to a stampede. In addition to the 16 deaths more than 70 others were injured.

Chikungunya thrives with climate variability in Caribbean

Jenny had gone to bed feeling well, but an hour into her sleep she suddenly awoke with a "stiff, cramping pain" behind one knee. Within the next hour the pains had multiplied and both knees began to lock, followed by stiffened fingers and pains in her chest, along with a fever.

Jenny Gittens, 61, described her experience with chikungunya over the next two weeks as marked by excruciating pain. "If I had a choice between chikungunya and having to deliver a baby I would go for the baby pains, it was that bad," Gittens, a mother of two said.

St. Kitts-Nevis joins International Mother Language Day observance

A day aimed at developing a fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions around the world as well as promoting unity in diversity and international understanding, through multilingualism and multiculturalism; International Mother Languages Day, will be celebrated on Saturday February 21.

The day is observed annually by the National Commission for UNESCO as part of its mandate to raise awareness globally in keeping with the objectives of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
