PM Harris tells OECS Heads to be wedded to efforts of regional integration


Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 22, 2015 (SKNIS)—Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, gave a passionate plea, often to rousing applause, to OECS (Organization of Caribbean States) Heads “to be wedded to efforts of regional integration in the OECS and CARICOM (Caribbean Community).
 
Speaking at the 62nd OECS Authority Meeting (November 18-19) at the opening ceremony held at the Fort Young Hotel in Dominica, Dr. Harris said “we need one another.”
 

Media Practitioners In The Caribbean Focus On Guidelines In The Profession To Protect Children


Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 20, 2015 (SKNIS):  In an effort to effectively and efficiently report on children’s issues in the Caribbean region, media practitioners from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), as well as Barbados, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago, have pledged their dedication to implementing guidelines that would assist them in protecting the rights of children. This was done on day two of the training workshop on Responsible coverage of Children’s Issues, being held in Antigua from November 18-20.
 

Barbados PM-CARICOM Chair – upcoming Commonwealth and COP21 Meetings important

“Mr. Stuart said the potential outcomes of the Paris discussions would be important to Barbados and the CARICOM region, given the projected adverse effects climate change would have on the countries.”
The Prime Minister pointed out that the CARICOM Heads of Government at their meeting earlier this year in Barbados adopted a Declaration for Climate Action, which sets out the region’s agreed negotiating positions. He added that the Declaration asserts that the Heads “look forward to the adoption for the first time of a universal, legally binding agreement at the COP 21”.

CARPHA Executive Director Appeals for Balance when Pursuing Economic Growth in the Region


Castries, Saint Lucia, November 19, 2015:  Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), Dr C James Hospedales said economic growth should not come at the expense of healthy people and a healthy environment; and referred to this imbalance as one of the greatest challenges this Region faces.  Dr Hospedales was speaking at the opening of a three-day Caribbean Environmental Health Conference co-hosted by CARPHA, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Saint Lucia.
 

Caribbean Media Meet To Discuss The Safety And Security Of Children


Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 19, 2015 (SKNIS):  As the Caribbean region moves towards its quest to protect children, media practicioners representing  11 countries and territories stretching from Bahamas in the north to Suriname in the south, are currently in Antigua participating in a training workshop on responsible coverage of children’s and youth issues, which will run from November 18-20.
 

Jamaica delivers on promise to Dominica after Erika

Jamaica, on Wednesday (November 4), shipped off close to $50 million worth of bridge infrastructure and materials to tropical storm-ravaged Dominica, fulfilling a pledge that was made nearly two months ago.

The donation, initiated by the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, represents a joint public/private sector partnership.

It included two Bailey bridges from the National Works Agency (NWA), six tons of steel from Tank-Weld, and 18 tons of cement from a combination of interests. Oslo Bulk will ship the items to Dominica.

PM Skerrit appeals for Regional health scheme

A fresh appeal has been made to heads of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) for the implementation of a regional health scheme as the region faces a rise in Chronic Non Communicable Diseases (CNCDs).

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made the call at the 62nd OECS Authority Meeting which is currently underway in Dominica.

He said when persons are affected by CNCDs, in many cases, their personal financial reserves and the country suffer, but if this regional approach is realized, beneficiaries would be better served.

Increasing Regional Trade With Cuba

The Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) has supported the largest contingent of Caribbean firms to participate at the 33rd edition of the Havana International Trade Fair (FIHAV) from November 2-7, 2015, as part of the Regional Private Sector Development Programme and Haiti-Dominican Republic Binational Programme of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF).   [FIHAV 2015]

Most Remarkable Teen Awardees challenged to encourage development of at-risk youth

Twenty-five outstanding teens in the St. Kitts and Nevis were encouraged to identify and work along with at-risk youth to assist them in overcoming challenges. The challenge was thrown out by Michael Perkins, Senator and Acting Speaker of the Federal Parliament at the 25 Most Remarkable Teens (MRT) Awards at a special sitting of Parliament on Thursday, November 12. The Senator also used the opportunity to commend the teens on their achievement.
