Against the background of the Caribbean being home to some of the highest per capita energy costs in the world, the Caribbean Energy Efficiency Lighting Project (CEELP) team  recently engaged representatives and members of a diverse array of community groups from across the region  to raise awareness about the benefits of energy efficient lighting. As part of the project’s mandate to develop a deeper understanding about how energy efficient lighting can reduce energy costs and reduce users’ carbon footprints, the team embarked on a Knowledge Road Show in Dominica and St.

Making the Case for Caribbean Fishers at Paris Climate Conference

PARIS, Dec 6 2015 (IPS) - Horace Walters has made the 6,903km journey from his native St. Lucia to Paris to deliver a simple, yet urgent message to the international community.

Walters, who has been involved in fishing for more than 40 years, said coastal communities, fishers, and fish farmers are already profoundly affected by climate change. He pointed to rising sea levels and acid oceans among the impacts of climate change.

Dominica to establish an IT Academy

An Information Technology academy to facilitate ongoing capacity building on a range of ICT tools is to be established here.

The IT Academy, proposed by the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States (OAS), will complement an ongoing training for forty information technology secondary school teachers which is being funded by the OAS.

Caribbean Negotiators Determined to Succeed in Paris

PARIS, France, Dec 03 2015, CNS – They have come to Paris in “full force” with “a determination to succeed”. But whether that optimism will translate into an acceptable agreement for Caribbean leaders and negotiators remains to be seen.

The Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque told Caribbean News Service (CNS) on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21), that the region wants to ensure that the Paris agreement has enshrined in it, a provision for review every five years.

Region in efforts to prevent bird flu from wiping out poultry industry

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Wednesday December 2, 2015 – Agricultural officials are pushing for heightened biosecurity on poultry farms across the region in a bid to prevent avian influenza – better known as bird flu – from wiping out the multimillion poultry industry.

Livestock Development Officer at the sub-regional office of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), Dr Cedric Lazarus said there is a strong likelihood that the disease, which caused the culling of millions of turkeys and chickens in the United States earlier this year, could reach the region.
