Timothy Antoine Appointed as ECCB Governor

 The Monetary Council has appointed Mr Timothy Antoine as Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB). Mr Antoine, a Grenadian national, succee ds Sir K Dwight Venner who retired on 30 November, 2015. He is the holder of a BSc degree in Economics with Management from the University of the West Indies and a MSc in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics.

Zika Virus Under Surveillance

The Ministry of Health is continuing to monitor the Zika virus, which was reported in the Caribbean region for the first time in June 2015.

Speaking earlier today at a press conference to address the H1N1 and Zika viruses, Minister of Health, John Boyce, reported that there are currently eight suspected cases in Barbados.
 

Fisheries agency hosts CARICOM Secretary-General on Belize visit

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met on Thursday with Executive Director of the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Mr. Milton Haughton and his team of dedicated staff who continue to work with Member States to secure the Region’s invaluable fisheries resources.

The Belize-based CRFM was established in 2003 with a mandate to “promote and facilitate the responsible utilization of the region’s fisheries and other aquatic resources for the economic and social benefits of the current and future population of the region”.

SG meets new CARICOM Chairman, PM Barrow

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met the new Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Prime Minister Hon. Dean Barrow of Belize, at the Prime Minister’s Belize City Office, on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Barrow assumed the CARICOM Chairmanship on 1 January 2016, taking over from the Prime Minister of Barbados, Rt. Hon Freundel Stuart whose six-month tenure ended on December 31.

Belize is scheduled to hold the 27th Inter-sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government in February.

Guyana stands to be first country to receive assistance from CDF in second funding cycle

Guyana is likely to be the first member state to benefit from a new country assistance programme (CAP) under the CARICOM Development Fund’s (CDF) 2015-2020 funding cycle, since that country is already eligible to receive further support by virtue of having paid up its full assessed contribution to the organisation.

CEO Rodinald Soomer disclosed this recently stating: “The CDF is ready and willing to make this possible and wishes to thank the government of Guyana for its demonstration of commitment to, and confidence in, the CDF.

New Registrar General E-Services ‘Perfect Example’ of Public-Private Partnership Effectiveness

Barbados’ 50th Birthday launches on January 6th 2015

When the launch of Barbados’ 50th Anniversary Independence celebrations comes off this Wednesday, January 6, Barbadians can expect a line-up featuring the “who’s who” of local talent.

That assurance came from Manager of Special Projects at the National Cultural Foundation (NCF), Alison Sealy-Smith, during a recently-held press conference at the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations Secretariat, located in the Old Town Hall Building in Bridgetown.

African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP)  moving from aid to development

Although it was established 40 years ago, the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) is still relevant today says secretary general Dr Patrick Ignatius Gomes.

Guyanese-born Dr Gomes, who is in T&T for a few days before flying back on Tuesday to Brussels, Belgium, where the ACP headquarters is located, said the ACP was trying to shift from a dependency syndrome. 

Now ten months into his five-year term at the ACP, Dr Gomes said his experience as secretary-general has so far been encouraging, demanding, challenging and interesting.
