Minister plugs protection of vulnerable –at opening of two-day sensitisation on CSME

“AS we envisage free movement of peoples, we must also address the fact that we need to protect the welfare of vulnerable groups such as non-unionised workers, workers with disabilities, youth and unskilled persons who may be exploited by unscrupulous employers,” Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence said yesterday as she addressed a CARICOM forum on the Free Movement Regimes of the Caribbean Community.

Guyana’s Labour and Employers organisations sit together on regional free movement

Representatives of Guyana’s private sector, employers organisations and trade unions came together Wednesday for a two day sensitisation workshop on Free Movement within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy CSME.

The workshop is expected to build awareness among the participants about the provisions of some key CSME regimes, including free movement of skills/labour and the facilitation of travel generally; the right of establishment; and the free movement of services.

Guyana among 12 emerging travel destinations for 2016

Guyana presses other CARICOM states to respect free movement and CSME privileges

Minister Volda Lawrence made the call while joining Guyanese stakeholders from the private sector, employer organizations and trade unions on Wednesday for the opening of a sensitization workshop on free movement within the CSME.

Guyana’s Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence, has called on Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states to ensure that there are no discriminatory acts meted to persons seeking to take advantage of the privileges within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Barbados reports suspected cases of Zika and H1N1 viruses

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Monday January 11, 2016 – Health authorities in Barbados have reported eight suspected cases of the H1N1 and Zika viruses.

Minister of Health John Boyce said samples have been sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency for confirmatory testing.

And he has cautioned the population not to panic.

The minister said that although he is aware that members of the public would be concerned whenever a new disease emerged, Barbadians should use simple measures to prevent mosquito breeding around their homes, business places and communities.
