CSME consultation feeds into Regional Electronic Notice Board

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 02, 2016 (SKNIS): Two consultations with the objective of discussing and negotiating a regional procurement regime, specifically pertaining to a regional electronic notice board for CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) member-states were held January 28 and 29 in St. Kitts.

CELAC adopts CARICOM’s call for reparations

The Community of Latin and American States CELAC Parliamentary group has adopted the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) call for reparations for native genocide and the enslavement of African people in the Caribbean through the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

OAS delegation welcomes constructive discussions in Haiti

The Special Mission of the Organisation of American States (OAS) to Haiti, headed by the Chair of the Permanent Council, Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Ronald Sanders, arrived in Port-au-Prince on Sunday.

The Mission has so far met with President Michel Martelly and senior members of the government, Senate President Jocelerme Privert, and members of the various political parties in the Senate, as well as Lower Chamber President Cholzer Chancy.

WHO declares Zika an International Public Health Emergency

The World Health Organization declared the spread of Zika and an associated birth defect an international public health emergency Monday, freeing funds to combat the disease.

“This is an extraordinary event,” said WHO Director General Margaret Chan at a press conference Monday. “It poses a public health threat to other parts of the world and a coordinated international response is needed.”

Caribbean tourism sector to be enhanced by better health systems

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -- Trinidad and Tobago is one of six Caribbean countries to benefit from a US$800,000 Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) grant to develop and implement a regional tourism health information, monitoring and response system. The other Caribbean nations that are beneficiaries of the IDB grant, as disclosed at Wednesday morning’s grant signing ceremony, are The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Guyana and Jamaica.

MOU boosts regional sustainable fisheries coordination

Three Regional Fisheries Bodies (RFBs) on Wednesday 27 January signed  a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)  to facilitate, support and strengthen the coordination of actions to increase the sustainability of fisheries.

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM); the Organisation of the Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA); and the FAO- Western Central Atlantic Fisheries Commission (FAO-WECAFC) signed the MOU in Cartagena, Colombia.
