Jamaica’s climate change fight fuels investments in renewables

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Tuesday January 19, 2106, IPS – By year’s end, Jamaica will add 115 mega watts (MW) of renewable capacity to the power grid, in its quest to reduce energy costs and diversify the energy mix in electricity generation to 30 per cent by 2030.

With 90 per cent of its electricity coming from fossil fuels, the government is committed to reducing the country’s carbon emissions by increasing the amount of electricity generated from renewables from 9 per cent now, to 15 per cent by 2020.

Washington, D.C., 18 January 2016 (PAHO/WHO) — With the Zika virus now circulating in 18 countries and territories of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) is recommending that its member countries monitor and report any increases in neurological syndromes and congenital anomalies, which growing evidence suggests may be linked to Zika infections.

CDB hosts ‘Conversation’ on gender socialisation

Gender stereotypes can be imposed on children from infancy, and therefore, the process of dispelling them must start in the early childhood years of development. Preparation for CCJ referendum in Antigua-Barbuda underway – but government issues warning

JOHN’S, Antigua, Jan. 16, CMC – The Electoral Commission in Antigua and Barbuda  is in the process of preparing for a referendum to determine whether the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will replace the British Privy council as the final court of appeal.

The referendum is scheduled to be held later this year but the Gaston Brown led administration has warned that it could stop the process if it becomes too politicised.

Jamaica to Host Historic Regional Security Conference

The Jamaica Defence Force will this year host the Caribbean Nations Security Conference (CANSEC) from the 26 to 29 January in Kingston, Jamaica.  The annual conference, which is in its 14th year, is a forum for defence and security chiefs from across the region to hold collective discussions on mutual and common security concerns while sharing experiences and ideas.

John Stollmeyer Director of Caribbean Permaculture Consultants told GIS the idea is to get communities to be creative with ideas for production that are inexpensive to start, but with big profit margins.
