Free Movement of Labour workshop underway in Belize

Belize City, 10th February, 2016 – Twenty Belizeans from the private sector, public sector and union representatives attended day one of a two-day workshop on the Free Movement of Labour in Belize City at the Radisson Fort George Hotel and Marina.

The workshop opened with four key speakers that highlighted the history, present progress and the benefits of the CSME. Keynote Speaker, CEO Kerry Belisle reiterated the commitment of the Labour Department to facilitate free movement and to reinvigorate domestic systems that would create greater efficiency and transparency.

Jamaica begins process to get reggae inscribed on UNESCO cultural heritage list

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Tuesday February 9, 2016 – Jamaica’s Ministry of Youth and Culture is moving to have reggae inscribed on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Principal Director of the Culture and Creative Industries Policy Division in the Ministry of Youth and Culture, Dr. Janice Lindsay, says the ministry has set up a committee to prepare the documents expected to be submitted in March 2017.

OECS countries agree on harmonized approach to fight against Zika

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Friday February 5, 2016 – Ministers of Health of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) have agreed on a harmonized approach to combating the fast spreading Zika virus which has already affected more than 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

OECS chairman and Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, who made the announcement yesterday, said the effort includes monitoring and surveillance, eradication and protection, care and case management, and public education campaigns.

Barbados aims to boost exports to region and beyond

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Friday February 5, 2016 – Industry Minister Donville Inniss says Barbados needs to increase its export of goods and services to the rest of the world and the Caribbean region is the best starting point.

He says it’s the largest export market for Barbados and the one that offers the greatest potential.

Inniss was speaking at a press conference at the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC), following a five-day Caribbean Community (CARICOM) trade mission aimed at generating increased exports to St. Lucia, Grenada and Guyana.

President Martelly signs agreement to end political stalemate

 Haiti’s outgoing President Michel Martelly on Saturday reached an agreement with parliament to form a caretaker government when he leaves power ton Sunday.

Media reports say under the agreement parliament will elect an interim president for a four-month term.

A presidential runoff due to be held last month was scrapped after opposition candidate Jude Celestin threatened to boycott the vote over allegations of fraud in the first round, and protesters took to the streets in force.

Upholding women’s human rights essential to Zika response - Zeid

GENEVA (5 February 2016) – Upholding women’s human rights is essential if the response to the Zika health emergency is to be effective, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said Friday, adding that laws and policies that restrict access to sexual and reproductive health services in contravention of international standards, must be repealed and concrete steps must be taken so that women have the information, support and services they require to exercise their rights to determine whether and when they become pregnant.

CARPHA Observes World Cancer Day

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. February 4, 2016. Cancers are the second leading cause of death in the Caribbean region.  Breast cancer is the main cause of death among females, followed by cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable, yet it claims the lives of a large number of women in the Caribbean each year. The majority of cancer deaths in Caribbean men are due to prostate cancer, followed by lung cancer.

CARICOM Strengthens Consumer Protection in the CSME

As 2016 gets underway, the CARICOM Secretariat continues its drive toward a fully functioning single market with consumer protection training for CSME-participating Member States kicking off this month.
