Trade Ministers join cross-sectoral action to ensure healthy Community

The role of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) in boosting the health of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was among matters that were brought before the Council which met in Georgetown, Guyana, last week.

Trade Ministers discussed health in recognition of the cross-sectoral linkages and the need for action to confront, in particular, non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs are affecting the health of the Region’s workforce and have the potential to affect the Region’s competitiveness.  Child obesity was also discussed.

UWI hosts 3rd annual Cyber Security Conference

THE Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication, University of the West Indies will be hosting the third annual Cyber Security Conference under the theme "Data Protection, Financial Services and Customer Awareness". The conference will be held at the UWI Regional Headquarters, Mona, in St Andrew, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A number of international speakers will address the conference.

 

Christine Runnegar, director of Public Policy at Internet Society (ISOC), Washington, USA will speak, as well as a representative of Google, Acadia Senese.

CARICOM, regional leaders condemn Paris terrorist attacks

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks against innocent civilians in Paris, while individual regional leaders have also taken a similar position.

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, in a message of condolence, extended deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of the 129 who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the more than 350 who were injured in the attacks claimed by Islamic State (IS) militants.

UN wants greater action to stem diabetes in Caribbean

UNITED NATIONS, (CMC) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says the people of the Caribbean must take steps towards a healthy lifestyle while governments create conditions to stem the global epidemic of diabetes.

In his message to mark World Diabetes Day on Saturday, the secretary- general reiterated the warning from the World Health Organization (WHO) that diabetes will be the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.

"Let us all step up to limit the impact of diabetes," he said.

Guyana has something to celebrate- remarkable progress made in tackling HIV/AIDS - UN envoy

Guyana’s achievement in the battle against HIV/AIDS compared with some countries in the Caribbean has been described as remarkable. This is according to United Nations Secretary General Special Envoy for HIV in the Caribbean, Dr. Edward Greene.

 Dr. Greene, in a recent interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA), disclosed that, “we have to look at the developments over the last ten to fifteen years and when we compare the Guyana status, in terms of HIV prevalence from 2000 to 2015, remarkable progress has been made.”

Cuba Leading Eradication of HIV/AIDS, UN Says

The U.N. recognizes Cuba’s social model as a way to fight HIV/AIDS. Cuba is an example for the world to follow on how to eradicate AIDS, the executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS said Friday. "We are very proud of what Cuba has done in the fight against HIV/AIDS," said dirctoy Michel Sidibe, upon his visit to the Caribbean island. He further recognized the success of its “social approach” to confronting the illness, which has allowed Cuba to achieve important results and become the “vanguard” of public health care.

MDGs 2015 report highlights achievements and challenges for Belize

The the United Nations development Program (UNDP) Millennium Development Goals (MDG) report and post 2015 agenda gave Belize positive reviews in some areas but noted there is still much progress to be made.

According to the report, Belize is failing to meet its goal to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. The report said Belize is off target in combating the prevalence of underweight children under five years old.

Special UN Envoy on official mission in Guyana to discuss HIV response initiative

 Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally was today paid a courtesy call by Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General in the Caribbean Region, Dr. Edward Greene who is currently on a six-day official mission in Guyana. Dr. Greene was accompanied by UNAIDS Country Director to Suriname and Guyana, Dr. Martin Odiit.
