IMF approves funds for storm-hit Dominica

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on October 28, 2015 approved a disbursement of an amount of about US$8.7-million for Dominica as the island rebuilds following the ravages of Tropical Storm Erika.

Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair of the IMF, Mitsuhiro Furusawa, said an assessment report by the World Bank and the Government of Dominica estimates total damage and loss at US$483 million, 96 percent of GDP, making Erika the worst natural disaster ever to strike Dominica.

CCREEE reaches the next step in development

A collective approach to developing the region’s renewable energy resources, improving the use of energy and increasing resilience to climate change, has reached its next step in development.

Set to be up and running by the end of the year, the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) is expected to be a medium used at the inter and intra-regional SIDS levels, to share individual experiences, knowledge and skills, as well as to nurture further development among the SIDS within the Caribbean region.

CARICOM climate change ministers and negotiators working out COP21 strategy

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, Wednesday October 28, 2015 – CARICOM climate change negotiators and ministers began a two-day meeting in St. Lucia today, to revise and improve the region`s negotiating artillery in preparation for the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

Regional financial services sector called on to be proactive not reactive

The Caribbean region has to take ownership of regulatory issues affecting the international financial services sector. Stakeholders in the sector must start using their high level of expertise and the Diaspora community with their vast international connections to lobby and convince international regulatory institutions of the importance of the sector for the regional economies. To change the focus from reactive to proactive, a regional secretariat should be established that advocates and formulates policies for the region.

CARICOM and Brazil strengthening relations – SG pays official visit

At the request of the Foreign Minister of Brazil, H.E. Mauro Luiz Vieira, Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque paid an official visit to Brazil on 26 October 2015.
In the course of the visit, the Secretary-General met with the Foreign Minister and senior officials at the Foreign Ministry, Itamaraty, the Director of the Brazilian Agency for technical cooperation, and the President of EMBRAPA, the agricultural institute. He also participated in a Round Table with students at the Rio Branco Institute diplomatic school.

Regional statisticians and stakeholders in the sector are meeting in Bridgetown, Barbados, this week on the heels of the observances earlier this month of Caribbean Statistics Day and World Statistics Day, both celebrated under the theme ‘Better Data, Better Lives’.

The Barbados meetings are the 40th Meeting of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS); the 25th Meeting of the Regional Census Coordinating Committee (RCCC); and the 8th Regional Statistical Research Seminar.

Animation Bootcamp - Off To A Great Start!

For the past 14 years, the Animae Caribe Festival has been a project in research and development. What the annual animation festival has identified is a gap between education, training, learning, art and actual production. “The intention is to fill that gap,” said Camille Selvon Abrahams, founder of Animae Caribe.
 

‘Animating the Caribbean’ expanding its network

The Region’s largest animation and digital media festival, Animae Caribe, is staging its 14th edition of the festival from 27 – 31 October, 2015, in Trinidad and Tobago.

At this year’s event, Animae Caribe is recording significant progress in terms of Regional representation with attendance of animation networks from Jamaica JAN (Jamaica Animation Network), Barbados BANG (Barbados Animation Network Guild), Suriname SAN (Suriname Animation Network) and Trinidad and Tobago TTAN (Trinidad and Tobago Animation Network).
