CARICOM SG acknowledges value of Commonwealth Legislative Drafting and Law Revision assistance

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met with officials of the Commonwealth Secretariat  on Friday 20 March 2015, in Guyana as part of the review by the Commonwealth of its ongoing legislative drafting and law revision assistance to the region.

The Commonwealth team, comprising Mr Steven Malby, Head of Law Development, Rule of Law Division and Mrs Pauline Campbell, Adviser, Technical Assistance Unit, also met with the Office of the General Counsel and the experts placed by the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) in the CARICOM Secretariat.

The provision of reliable potable water is essential for food and nutrition security, environmental sustainability, industrial and economic development, and health. Therefore, joining the world to commemorate World Water Day is important to the Caribbean Community.

Partnerships crucial for water sustainability – CARICOM ASG

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown)     At the world celebrates International Water Day on March 22, 2015, Assistant Secretary-General, Directorate of Human and Social Development, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Ambassador Douglas Slater, has underscored the importance of partnerships in achieving sustainable water management.

In a message to mark the occasion, Dr. Slater noted that partnerships remained one of the means of implementation needed to achieve water sustainability.

CSME students missions to kick off in April

Phase 1 of the 2015 CSME students missions begins on April 13-17 with the first batch of tertiary students from four participating CARICOM Member States: Belize, Dominica, Grenada, and Saint Lucia.

With the support of the European Union under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), the Students Engaging the CSME through Field Promotions Project aims to mobilize and train tertiary students on the opportunities offered by the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Making Strides toward Improved CSME Access for CARICOM Nationals

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     CARICOM nationals will now have more efficient access to the provisions of the CARICOM Single Market due to a recently concluded training exercise. Close to 300 public administrators and officials across the region have been trained in a new data management and work flow system that will make application processes under the CSME much smoother.

Consumers need help to make more informed and healthier decisions – CCC

The Caribbean is facing an epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease1 . According to the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), unhealthy diets are a major contributor to the NCD epidemic. The agency reported that the typical Caribbean diet is characterised by an under-consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, cereals and legumes, coupled with an over-consumption of imported foods which are rich in saturated fat, sugar, salt, and refined cereals.

CDB to help countries gather poverty data more effectively

Inadequate or outdated data have hindered the fight against poverty in some Caribbean countries, including those of the Eastern Caribbean. The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), along with partners, will be working together to get a better picture of the effect of poverty by improving its Country Poverty Assessment (CPA) programme over the next five years.

Communique issued at the conclusion of Conference of the Foreign Ministers of Member States of CARICOM and Germany in Berlin, 2nd/3rd March 2015

At the Conference of   Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Foreign Ministers and Germany, held on 2-3 March 2015, in Berlin, representatives renewed their commitment to further strengthen existing fields of cooperation and to explore new areas for interaction.

The Conference, held at the invitation of the government of Germany, “noted with satisfaction the steady and continuous progress in… relations”, between Germany and the Region.
