CARICOM DSG encourages young girls to join ICT revolution

CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan has encouraged young girls to become more involved in the ICT sector. She was speaking at the opening ceremony for an event hosted by the CARICOM Secretariat to commemorate Girls in ICT Day 2015. Female students from schools in Georgetown including Bishops’ High School and the University of Guyana converged on the Secretariat’s Headquarters in Turkeyen for the ceremony aimed at highlight ICT and ways in which girls can benefit from exploring careers in this field.

In October 2011, a report commissioned by Commonwealth Heads of Government made the following compelling statement:
At least 60 per cent of the Commonwealth’s population is under    30 years of age.
That is significantly lower than the global average of 52%.
Therefore the future of the Commonwealth – and of the world it 
shares – is inexorably tied to the future of these young people.
 

Cricket Board structure to be reviewed: CARICOM-WICB Meeting agreement

CARICOM and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have agreed to establish a panel to conduct a review of the governance structure of the Board.

This was the key outcome of a near five-hour long meeting between the CARICOM Cricket Governance Committee and the Directors and Management of the WICB. The Chairman of CARICOM, the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of The Bahamas and CARICOM Secretary General, Ambassador Irwin La Rocque, also attended the meeting which took place last Monday, April 20, at the Spice Island Beach Resort.

Cricket Legends meet CARICOM Heads of Government

West Indies Cricket Legends Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Wesley Hall, Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Andy Roberts, Deryck Murray, Gordon Greenidge and Michael Holding met in Grenada with the CARICOM Cricket Governance Committee to have a discussion on the Governance of Cricket.

I should like to join those who have preceded me in warmly welcoming you once again to the Caribbean, on this occasion, for a short encounter with the Heads of Government of our CARICOM Region.

We are pleased to be able to spare you a temporary respite from exposure to the asperities of the weather in the state from which you have for the last six (6) years presided over the destiny of your great nation, the United States of America.

CARPHA and Mexico sign MOU to benefit 17 million Caribbean people

Mexico, April 23, 2015.  The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Health of the United Mexican States, through the Federal Commission for Protection from Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS).  The aim of the MoU is to establish a mechanism for strengthening international cooperation in the health field.   The MoU will also provide support for the establishment of the Caribbean Regulatory System (CRS) which will be hosted by CARPHA, and will benefit the people of the Caribbean. 
 

COTED dynamic, critical to achieving Community’s goals – Chair

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is one of the greatest inventions for economic collaboration among Member States with the ultimate goal of creating benefits for people of the Region, Chair of the 40th Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) the Hon Claude Hogan, Minister of Agriculture, Trade, Land, Housing and the Environment of Montserrat, said Thursday.

He was at the time delivering remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the two-day Meeting of the COTED at the Pegasus Hotel, Georgetown, Guyana.
