Statement by the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque On the Occasion of International Women’s Day, 8 March 2015

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Today, I join with the global community to salute women and girls everywhere, particularly those of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).  It is well known that it is the women of our Community who have been the bedrock of society and have been agents of change within our societies. In so doing, they have been steadfast in their determination to improve their economic, social, political, cultural and legal status.

 

Promising prospects for CARICOM Customs harmonisation process

Five days of discussions on regulations for a harmonized regional customs framework were held, this week in Antigua and Barbuda, at a forum which brought together customs officials, legal experts and CARICOM representatives. 

CARICOM heads agree to focus on sports tourism and cultural industries

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     CARICOM heads have decided to place emphasis on developing cultural and creative industries and a sports sector to boost their economies. The announcement was made at the closing press conference for the two-day 26th Inter-sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government on Friday afternoon by Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government and Prime Minister of The Bahamas Hon. Perry Christie.

Regional Seismic and Tsunami Risk Workshop

Bridgetown, Barbados, March 2, 2015 (CDEMA) - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) in association with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Jamaica and with the support of the Governments of Chile and Spain under the Chilespana triangular cooperation, will host a Regional Seismic and Tsunami Risk Workshop from March 3rd -4th, 2015 at ODPEM''s Office in Kingston, Jamaica.

Economic growth of CARICOM region set to improve as harmonised customs bill nears finalisation

A momentous 12 year effort to bring to pass a much-coveted harmonised customs bill for the Caribbean is now in its final stages. The bill is intended to foster economic growth in the region, which will ultimately contribute to the improvement of CARICOM nation economies. CARICOM policy makers are due to finalise the harmonisation of customs laws in two meetings that will take in place in Antigua & Barbuda from 23 – 27 February and in Trinidad & Tobago from 23 – 26 March 2015.

Developing the Region’s Human and Cultural assets takes spotlight as CARICOM Heads Meet in The Bahamas

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Heads of Government of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States gather in The Bahamas for their 26th Inter-sessional Meeting, 26-27 February 2015. 

A major focus of this Meeting will be leveraging the Region’s human, cultural and natural assets to enhance the development of the Community.  Key discussion areas also include issues related to Reparations for Native Genocide and Slavery, and the Marijuana Commission.

Address economic challenges to the Region – CARICOM Outgoing Chair

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)    Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Hon. Gaston Browne, called on the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to jointly and aggressively address the EU policy to end the existing cap on European sugar beet production from the end of next year. He also called for action to avert the potential threat to the Region’s banking sector, given its label as a “high risk area for financial services”.

CARICOM committed to customs harmonisation

Representatives from CARICOM Member States have, from 23 to 27 of February, further developed the guidelines for improvements in customs procedures across the Caribbean region, ultimately aiming to boost the region’s competitiveness and its standing as an attractive option for investment and doing business.
