Statement by Hon Gaston Browne MP Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda at the Opening of the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting In Nassau, Bahamas

I thank Prime Minister Perry Christie and the people and government of The Bahamas for the warm welcome given to all the participants in this meeting.
We have no doubt that under Prime Minister Christie’s chairmanship, the outcomes of this meeting will be beneficial to the people of the Caribbean Community who have entrusted us with a mandate to manage their regional affairs.
 
As I formally hand-over the gavel of chairmanship of CARICOM, I would like to reflect briefly on the period of my own stewardship of the Community’s affairs.

It was a very proud moment for me to assume the role of Chairman of Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community for the period 1st January 2015 to 30th June 2015. It is also a very proud moment for me, my Government and the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to have the honour of hosting this Twenty-Sixth Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community here in Nassau.

CARICOM Chairman welcomes US, Japan position on development financing

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, Prime Minister of the Bahamas has expressed satisfaction that the United States of America and Japan were willing to show greater flexibility on the issue of GDP per capita as a determinant for concessional financing for development. 

CARPHA Places Mosquito-borne Diseases as a High Priority in the Public Health Agenda

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, February 24, 2015.  The emergence of the Chikungunya virus in the Caribbean in 2013, led to more than 800,000 suspected cases in the Caribbean and Latin America to date. The impact on health and the economies of the Region have been considerable, especially as a significant proportion of persons affected have long-term complications of joint pain and impairment of function.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen .
All protocols observed. It is my pleasure to share some thoughts with you all this morning at the opening of this Special First Meeting of Directors of Gender Bureaux.
The Bank is particularly encouraged to see the decisive steps being taken by the CARICOM Secretariat towards a Plan of Action on Gender Equality aligned with the transformative agenda for the region, agreed by the CARICOM Heads of Government.

CARICOM saddened by Haitian Carnival deaths

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has extended the Community’s condolences to families of the persons who lost their lives in the tragic accident during this week’s Carnival celebrations in Haiti.

In a message to the President of Haiti, His Excellency Michel Martelly, the Secretary General also expressed the Community’s hope for a speedy recovery of the many others who were injured.

Statement on St. Kitts and Nevis Elections from Head of the CARICOM Observer Mission

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The CARICOM Observer Mission has commended the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their enlightened response to the challenges connected to Monday’s general elections.

 

The Mission said the maturity of their response resulted in the satisfactory conclusion of all the activities on Elections day.

 

The commendation was contained in a Statement the Head of the Mission, issued Tuesday.

CARICOM Chair issues Statement on St. Kitts-Nevis situation

On behalf of the Caribbean Community, I congratulate the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for the peaceful manner in which polling at the general elections was conducted yesterday, 16 February 2015.  In a preliminary report to the CARICOM Secretary-General, the Chief of the CARICOM Electoral Observation Mission stated that the process was generally orderly, despite some challenges.

The CARICOM Observer Mission has commended the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for their enlightened response to the challenges associated with Monday’s general elections.

The Mission said the maturity of the people’s response resulted in the satisfactory conclusion of all the activities on Elections day.

The commendation was contained in a Statement from the Head of the Mission, issued on Tuesday.
