CARICOM candidates vie for OAS number two position

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) on Wednesday received presentations by the two candidates proposed by the member states for the position of Assistant Secretary General – the current Permanent Representatives of Guyana, Bayney Karran, and of Belize, Nestor Mendez- in a special meeting that took place in Washington, DC.

Jamaica to Launch $6 Million Climate Change Resilience Project

Jamaica is slated to launch a $6 million climate change resilience project in the greater Kingston metropolitan area, the government announced this week.

The project is called “Building Climate Resilience of Urban Systems through Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) in LAC.” The latter refers to Latin America and the Caribbean, where Jamaica was one of three countries selected by the United Nations Environment Programme to launch such a project.

St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony on Tuesday delivered a “Distinguished Open Lecture” on the topic, “Delivered or Denied: The Dividends of Integration” at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus.

UNDP and Cuba to boost development cooperation, special focus on renewable energy

Havana – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Director for Latin America and the Caribbean Jessica Faieta announced continued support to Cuba in the economic, social and  environmental fronts.

At a press conference in Havana she said that UNDP will also place special emphasis on boosting renewable energy sources, especially through biofuel.

Jessica Faieta also mentioned the need to increase support to local development as well as import substitution.

UNDP, IDB, ECLAC to boost access to sustainable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean

Washington, 23 February 2015- The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) launched today in Washington a partnership to support the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative in Latin America and the Caribbean, boosting access to energy and increasing the use of renewable energies and efficiency in the region, with specific goals by 2030.

Caribbean now has facility for disaster training

A Caribbean Training Centre, warehouse and the Regional Coordination Centre are all now housed with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency’s (CDEMA), new eight million dollar headquarters, which was just launched at Resilience Way, Lower Estate, St. Michael.

Executive Director of CDEMA, Ronald Jackson, said the Centre, would focus mainly on the delivery of standardised training, even to the Master’s degree level.
