CTO Secretary General calls for action to facilitate travel to and through the Caribbean

Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Hugh Riley has urged regional authorities to institute an Open Skies policy and wherever possible to eliminate secondary screening at Caribbean airports.

Mr. Riley argues that while an Open Skies policy would allow regional carriers to take unlimited flights to all Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states and encourage the growth of competition among carriers, while elimination of secondary screening would encourage greater demand for intra-regional travel.

CARICOM SG meets US Global AIDS Coordinator

Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary-General of theCaribbean Community (CARICOM), on Wednesday held discussions with Ambassador Deborah Birx, M.D., U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator/Special Representative for Global Health Diplomacy, U.S. Presidential Emergency Plan for HIV Relief (PEPFAR). The Secretary-General and Ambassador Birx met on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Grave concern” – CARICOM Cricket Governance sub-committee Chair

It is with grave concern that I noted the recent comments made by the Coach of the West Indies cricket team, Mr. Phil Simmons, in which he stated that “outside influences” have had a hand in the selection of the West Indies ODI team.

As Chairman of the CARICOM Sub Committee on Cricket Governance, and as a life long fan of the game, it is my view that West Indies cricket is fortunate to have a leadership team that includes head coach Phil Simmons, captain Jason Holder and chairman of selectors, Clive Lloyd.

 

PM Gonsalves, former US President Clinton launch ‘Blue Guardians’

COLORADO,(CMC) – St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have been disappointed at the broken promises given to them by the international community regarding development assistance.

Gonsalves Monday joined President James Michel of the Seychelles and former U.S. President Bill Clinton in launching the ‘Blue Guardians’ in the United States.

Barbados diplomat wants CARICOM certificate plan

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, (CMC) – Barbados ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Robert ‘Bobby’ Morris Monday called for the implementation of a CARICOM Certificate Plan to help young people become entrepreneurs or form cooperatives.

Morris told students from Antigua and Barbuda participating in a CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) mission to Barbados that Regional integration is not an easy process and a certificate would make it easier for young people to get involved in business.
