SG discusses CARICOM-UNAIDS continued collaboration

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque met with UNAIDS Executive Director Mr. Michel Sedibe on the margins of the UN Meetings currently taking place in New York.  The discussions centered around continued collaboration between CARICOM and UNAIDS in the fight against AIDS.

The Caribbean Community  has expressed  whole hearted support for the Global strategy proposed by UNAIDS to achieve the bold aspirational goal of ending AIDS which aligns with the global health targets in the 2030 SDGs approved by the UN.

 

PM Harris addresses UN General Assembly

 Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris told the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 26 that his Government of National Unity is fully committed to sustainable development goals. The Prime Minsiter was at the time speaking during the 70th Regular Session of the United Nations being held under the theme ‘Transforming our World’, which focused on the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda with special attention given to sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030,

Sir Hilary writes open letter to British PM on reparations

The chairman of CARICOM’s Reparation Commission, Sir Hilary Beckles, has penned an open letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron pleading for him to respond to the calls for compensation by the British for the period of slavery in the region.

According to Sir Hillary, otherwise, there could be the greatest political movement of this era.

CARPHA Provides Support to Dominica in the Aftermath of Tropical Storm Erika

In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Erika, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has been providing support to the Commonwealth of Dominica particular in the area of surveillance.  Dr. C James Hospedales, Executive Director of CARPHA accompanied by two Officers from the Agency, travelled to Dominica shortly after the disaster and in-country assistance was provided for three weeks.

CARICOM at forefront of sustainable development issues

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque and his delegation in the Plenary of the United Nations Summit for the adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, held at UN Headquarters, New York, 25-27 September 2015.

The Summit had as its main goal the official adoption of a new historic agenda entitled: “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” which was agreed upon by the 193 Member States of the United Nations, and includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

CARICOM Heads among world leaders addressing sustainable development

The Prime Ministers of St. Lucia Dr. Kenny Anthony (right) and Dr. Ralph Gonsalves meet on the floor of the United Nations Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Prime Minister Gonsalves addressed the Summit on the opening day Friday and Prime Minister Anthony will do so on Saturday. The summit ends on Sunday.

Antiguan Students to visit Barbados for CSME Exchange

Nineteen students from Antigua and Barbuda will be coming to Barbados for one week from September 27 to October 3, as part of a special exchange project under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The Students Engaging the CSME through Field Promotion is a collaboration between the CARICOM Secretariat, the CSME Public Education Programme and Barbados’ National Focal Point, and is facilitated under the 10th European Development Fund CSME Economic Integration Programme.
