CARICOM congratulates Cuba, US as steps to normalise relations continue

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has congratulated sister Caribbean nation Cuba and the United States on their ongoing moves to normalise relations.

In a Statement to coincide with today’s reopening of the US Embassy in Havana, following the recent reopening of the Cuban Embassy in Washington D.C., CARICOM said it will continue to encourage both sides, with which it has close relations, to complete the normalisation process in the interest of regional and hemispheric harmony

Barbados renews call for debt relief for the Caribbean

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC)– Barbados Wednesday renewed a call for an international debt relief programme for developing countries like those in the Caribbean saying it was not enough to speak “almost disparagingly” about the debt situation.

Region’s Nurses lauded for contributing to one of the world’s highest immunization rates

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean can boast of having one of the highest immunization rates in the world - even better than the United States, and credit for this must go to the Region’s nurses.

Assistant Secretary General for Human and Social Development at the CARICOM Secretariat Dr. Douglas Slater made the point as he addressed  the opening ceremony for the Forty-Second Annual General Meeting of the Regional Nursing Body, at the CARICOM Headquarters in Guyana on Tuesday.

Alternative ways of measuring development must be found

The United Nations (UN) is upbeat about advancing the process to reshape policies governing access to international public finance.

Developing countries have been lobbying for a revision of current development financing policies to encompass a multi-dimensional approach as distinct from the current primary criterion of GDP per capita income.

Animated Ideas Bootcamp to be held in October

For the first time in Animae Caribe Festival’s fifteen-year history, region-wide participation will be achieved.  From October 28-31, 2015, in Trinidad and Tobago, ten representatives from Caribbean animation studios will participate in round table discussions and the inaugural ‘Animated Ideas Bootcamp’.

Animated Ideas Bootcamp is a collaborative training and development project that encourages group participation for the advancement of animated series concepts for pitching and production.

The Bahamas calls for reform of UN Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The Bahamas government has called for a reform of the Security Council of the United Nations saying it was necessary to deal with the changing global environment.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell said that the reform of the Council “is long overdue” and called for a change “that would see a rotating seat for the small island developing states (SIDS)”.

Mitchell said that he saw a role for the Security Council in dealing with a wide range of issues from illegal migration to crime as a part of a multifaceted and collaborative global response.
