Governments of Dominica and Brazil Sign Visa Waiver Agreement

The governments of Dominica and Brazil have signed a new visa waiver agreement.

The new agreement means residents of Dominica and Brazil can travel between the two countries without the need of visas.

“I am glad to announce that from now on all Dominicans can go to Brazil without a visa as a tourist and I hope to get a lot of Brazilians coming here as tourists with the signing of document,” said Brazilian Ambassador to Dominica Jose Marcos Vienna.

Caribbean Connectivity: CARCIP Urges Greater Regional Innovation

Three Eastern Caribbean countries are benefitting from an infrastructure development thrust that could usher in a new era of technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship for the region.

The initiative is part of the World Bank-funded Caribbean Communications Infrastructure Program (CARCIP), coordinated by the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU).

A series of workshops rolling out in St Lucia, St Vincent and Grenada are intended to ensure that citizens can take full advantage of the telecommunications infrastructure upgrades.

Eight Caribbean countries to strengthen HIV programmes - UNAIDS

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Tuesday February 25, 2014, CMC – UNAIDS Caribbean said Monday that eight regional countries have finalised specific strategies aimed at strengthening their HIV programmes by making them more responsive to human rights.

It said that the representatives from Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago met her last week for a three-day workshop hosted by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and supported by the Ford Foundation.

PM Spencer says he is awaiting Court ruling before setting Antigua election date

The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) reports that Prime Minister Spencer says he is anxious to set a date for general election but his hands are presently tied.

THE BOOK that is to be written on post-Hugo Chavez Venezuela opened a new and dynamic chapter on Tuesday as thousands marched in the streets of Caracas, prompting opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez to turn himself into Venezuelan state authorities.

Lopez, leader of the opposition party Popular Will, announced that he would submit himself to detention by the state if the anti-government protests that began last week continued.

The response was clear as tens of thousands blocked thoroughfares and marched in the streets of Caracas.

6.5M Earthquake Shakes Eastern Caribbean, From Martinique to Grenada

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake northeast of Barbados caused shaking across the Eastern Caribbean early Tuesday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake, which occurred 172 kilometres northeast of Barbados, struck at around 5:27 AM local time. The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre also recorded the quake has having a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale.

Bahamas-China Visa Exemption Agreement Officially Begins

The new mutual visa exemption agreement between the Bahamas and China has officially taken effect.

The agreement, which was signed in December 2013, allows Bahamian and Chinese citizens to travel to one another’s country visa-free for up to 30 days. It does not allow the holder to engage in gainful employment, to study or reside in that country, however.

The move could be a boost for Chinese tourism to the Bahamas, particularly in light of the imminent opening of the China-funded Baha Mar resort project in New Providence at the end of this year.
