GUYANA-HEALTH-Guyana records significant decrease in malaria cases

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana recorded a significant decrease in the number of malaria cases in 2013 and health authorities continue to urge early diagnosis of the vector-borne disease in a bid to reduce the mortality rate. Figures released by the Ministry of Health show that in 2013, there were 23,489 cases of malaria as against 31,602 for eh previous year. The authorities gave no figures regarding deaths but said malaria mortality rates however, continue to fall as increased malaria prevention and control measures continue to dramatically reduce the impact of the disease.

ANTIGUA-CRIME-Government condemns “terrorist attacks” in China

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – Antigua and Barbuda has “strongly condemned’ the murder of at least 28 people during the “terrorist attack” at a train station in Kunming, China over the weekend. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said that attack, which left more than 100 people injured when knife-wielding men attacked commuters, should be condemned and was “very distressing”. In a note to Premier Li Keqiang of the People’s Republic of China, Prime Minister Baldwin said he supports every effort by the government to bring those responsible for “this heinous crime to justice.

Thousands of chikungunya cases in region

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, March (CMC) – The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDPC) says there are reports of new cases of the chikungunya virus in the Caribbean. The ECDPC said in the past week, 293 new cases of chikungunya have been reported in the region, with confirmed ones in St Martin (French), Martinique, St Barthélemy and Guadeloupe. New cases also surfaced in Dominica and French Guyana as well as St Kitts and Nevis.

CARIBBEAN-HEALTH -Caribbean urged to invest in prevention and care for hearing loss

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The United Nations health agency is calling on Caribbean and other governments around the world to invest in hearing care, as a new survey finds that many countries lack the capacity According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about half of all cases of hearing loss worldwide are easily prevented or treated.

CARIBBEAN-POLITICS-St. Lucia’s Opposition Leader wants “neutral” position on Venezuela

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – St. Lucia’s Opposition Leader Dr. Gale Rigobert is calling on Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to remain “neutral” in the ongoing political disturbances in Venezuela where the opposition have been staging anti-government demonstrations to force the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro.
Rigobert, speaking on the Observer Radio here, said that she does not believe that the regional countries should at this time get involved in “what is happening in Venezuela.

CARIBBEAN-POLITICS-Regional leaders to meet in St. Vincent next week

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders meet here next week for their inter-sessional summit with Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves confirming that there is “quite a long” agenda for the two-day meeting. Gonsalves, who is also the chairman of the 15-member grouping, told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the March 10-11 summit will discuss the economies of regional countries and efforts to deal with the challenges confronting them. Climate change and disaster preparedness would also be high on the agenda.

Caribbean Climate Innovation Center launches in Trinidad

The Caribbean Climate Innovation Center (CCIC)—a hub designed to help clean technology ventures transform the region to a low-carbon economy and create green jobs—launched yesterday in Freeport, Trinidad & Tobago.

The CCIC will offer financing, training, mentorship, and other services to a growing network of innovators in the areas of solar power, energy efficiency, water management, resource use efficiency, and sustainable agribusiness.

Trinidad Opens Embassy in China

Trinidad and Tobago has officially opened an Embassy in China.

The new Embassy opened in Beijing on Wednesday, inaugurated by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her official visit to China this week.

The opening of the embassy was first announced in June 2013, in the context of the visit to the country by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

At the time, Persad-Bissessar said the new embassy could include a Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Institute in Beijing.
