Commonwealth Committee supports peaceful solution to Belize-Guatemala border dispute

LONDON, CMC – The Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Belize is calling for a peaceful and final resolution of the longstanding disagreements concerning the border between Belize and Guatemala.

In a statement, the Committee, chaired by Barbados Foreign Minister Maxine McClean, said it met earlier this week to discuss the recent events that took place in the Adjacency Zone between the two countries that resulted in the death of at least one Guatemalan national.

Dominica Foreign Minister wants integration of Cuba in international community

As Dominica observes 20 years of diplomatic relations with Cuba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Francine Baron, has called for further integration of Cuba into the international community.

“Caribbean leaders continue to call for the continued integration of Cuba into the international community,” she said, at a ceremony held at the State House, on Wednesday night.

St. Kitts and Nevis leads regional charge towards vector control

Basseterre, St. Kitts – St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Health,  the Hon. Eugene Hamilton said that there was no greater threat to our health security than vectors and the diseases they transmit.  He noted this at the second Workshop to Develop a Regional Network on Research and Control of Emerging Vector-Bourne Diseases in the Caribbean being held in St. Kitts from May 17 – 20.

Vectors are disease-carrying organisms such as the aedes aegypti mosquito or mice.

Open Data Conference a success

The fifth annual Developing the Caribbean Conference and Codesprint (DevCa) was held from May 5-6 and explored how the Caribbean could utilise data to drive its responses to global changes in the public and private sector. The conference has received strong commendation from its partner, the Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM).

Open data is the idea that some data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish as they wish, without restrictions from copyright, patents or other mechanisms of control.

Caribbean Community Institution helps deliver climate resilient crops

In plain view of the mountainous terrain of Belize’s most southern district, Toledo, farmers of Trio Village have been facing a changing environment. Ya’Axche Conservation Trust approached the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) to assist the villagers with combating threats that were exacerbated by climate related events. This involved deforestation due to lack of water, insufficient arable land and forest fires which threatened crops.

19-yr-old begins setting up animation network

OVER the last few years, animation in the Caribbean has become a growing and thriving industry, as more and more persons recognise the importance animation can play in the preservation of cultural history.In Guyana, animation has, for the most part, been a small market; but with a vision to see animation grow and thrive in the country, former Bishops High School student 19-year-old Jubilante Cutting has embarked on the mission of creating an animation network.

Development of marijuana industry urgent – Jamaica Finance Minister

Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Hon. Audley Shaw, says Jamaica must move with urgency to develop a medical marijuana industry.

He pointed out that exploiting the benefits of marijuana is “not about smoking a spliff” or “walking around with two ounces of the weed.”

This is about building an industry of value-added products,” the Minister emphasised.

Mr. Shaw was  opening the  2016/17 Budget Debate in the House on May 12. His presentation was made under the theme: ‘Partnership for Economic Growth’.
