A meeting is currently underway in Barbados to chart the course for a new study on the impacts of rising cost factors of fishing operations. The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) is convening the two-day meeting which concludes today.
Among the rising cost factors in the industry are labour, fuel, fishing gear, repair and maintenance, and capital.

President Luis Alberto Moreno of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), President Warren Smith of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), Secretary Ernest Moniz of the United States Department of Energy (DOE), and Secretary General Irwin LaRocque of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that creates a framework for cooperation to promote programs and activities that foster the transformation of the energy sector in the Caribbean.
In preparation for this country’s hosting of the 13th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) from August 17 to 27, 2017, the Government of Barbados is inviting submissions of jingles, as well as designs for the CARIFESTA XIII logo.
Both the winning jingle and logo will be awarded a cash prize of Bds $10,000.
Jingles submitted should be 60 seconds in length; should contain voice, lyrics and musical accompaniment; and should speak to unity and the common heritage of the region.
The Belize Public Utilities Commission announced that Belize’s first Internet exchange point, named BIXP, was successfully launched in Belize City on April 27 at the campus of the University of Belize.
The launch was the culmination of unprecedented collaboration between Belizean Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the highly competitive local telecommunication sector. The Belize Public Utilities Commission, the national regulator, facilitated the process, with support from regional and international agencies.
All Internet providers in Belize have come together to form a non-profit company called the Belize Internet Exchange Point (BIXP) in order to vastly improve internet based services in the country. BIXP was launched on Wednesday, April 16, making Belize the only country in the Caribbean in which all Internet providers are connecting at the same exchange point.
