Preparation for CCJ referendum in Antigua-Barbuda underway – but government issues warning

JOHN’S, Antigua, Jan. 16, CMC – The Electoral Commission in Antigua and Barbuda  is in the process of preparing for a referendum to determine whether the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will replace the British Privy council as the final court of appeal.

The referendum is scheduled to be held later this year but the Gaston Brown led administration has warned that it could stop the process if it becomes too politicised.

The Region’s Ministers responsible for Community Affairs (Community Council of Ministers) met on Friday to review pressing matters to go before next month’s Inter-Sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government in Belize.

Several finance, sustainable development and foreign policy issues received attention. Plans for a dialogue among Finance Ministers on the eve of the Inter-Sessional meeting were also discussed.

CARICOM reform moving apace: SG

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat is proceeding apace with implementing the Community Strategic Plan 2015-2019, including the preparation of a Strategic Business Plan for the Secretariat, guided by the recently established Change Management Office.

This assurance was given to the Community Council of Ministers by Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, CARICOM Secretary-General on Friday as he addressed the opening of the 37th meeting of the Community’s second highest organ, referred to as The Council.

Labour, employers, government in Guyana commend CSME Free Movement regimes

Representatives of Guyana’s trade unions, employers and government are commending the Free Movement regimes within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as important contributors to the region’s development.

The groups are part of a two day Free Movement sensitization workshop, which began Wednesday.

“It is about people and peoples’ development, which is central to the Region’s development”, said  General Secretary of the Guyana Trade Union Congress Mr. Lincoln Lewis as he addressed the Opening Ceremony.

“AS we envisage free movement of peoples, we must also address the fact that we need to protect the welfare of vulnerable groups such as non-unionised workers, workers with disabilities, youth and unskilled persons who may be exploited by unscrupulous employers,” Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence said yesterday as she addressed a CARICOM forum on the Free Movement Regimes of the Caribbean Community.

Newly accredited Ambassador of Belize to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), H.E. Daniel Gutierez has said the best years of the integration movement lie ahead for what he calls the “tremendous untapped potential” that lies within the Region.

Speaking at a ceremony to present his letters of credence to CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque,  at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters on Wednesday, Mr. Gutierez referenced his Prime Minister’s New Year Address in which he heralded 2016 as a landmark year for the integration movement.

CARICOM accredits new Belizean envoy as Ambassadors meet

As the CARICOM Committee of Ambassadors meets in Georgetown, Guyana, Wednesday to engage on the Community Reform Process, CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque accepted the Letters of Credence from H.E. Daniel Gutierez, new Ambassador of Belize.

In a short accreditation ceremony held in his office, Ambassador LaRocque told the newest member of the Committee that he will have the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the integration movement by advancing the implementation of decisions of Organs of the Community at the national level.
