Saint Lucian Tertiary Students Head to Suriname

The CARICOM Secretariat is winding down the project ‘Students Engaging the CSME through Field Promotion’ with the first of the final three missions for 2016 getting underway this Monday, March 14. Nineteen Saint Lucian tertiary students from the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) and one CARICOM Youth Ambassador (CYA) are traveling to Suriname for the week-long mission. They are to be accompanied by Saint Lucia’s CSME Focal Point and a lecturer of the SALCC.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joins women and men globally to commemorate International Women’s Day, 8 March, 2016 under the theme Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality. The United Nations observance this year will reflect on how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda to effectively implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the new global agenda to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.

 

Customs Officers get training - under CARIFORUM–EU agreement

Several local customs officers, as well as stakeholders in the public and private sector benefitted from a customs and trade facilitation capacity workshop, conducted today at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA.)

The workshop, held in the agency’s Training Room, at Camp Street, forms part of a slew of capacity building initiatives being implemented across the region, under the Caribbean Forum CARIFORUM–EU (European Union) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA).

A call for more women in electoral processes

 On the eve of International Women’s Day, Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan has called for the increased involvement of women in the electoral processes.

She made the call to a group of senior officials in electoral management and monitoring who are participating in a CARICOM Secretariat-United Nations (UN) workshop on Building Resources in Democracy, Governance and Elections (BRIDGE) which opened Monday 7 March at the Marriot Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana.

CARICOM SG congratulates new Jamaica PM

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has extended heartiest congratulations to newly elected Prime Minister of Jamaica, Mr. Andrew Holness.

“I look forward to working with you in continuing to strengthen our integration movement in the interest of the people of Jamaica and of the wider Caribbean Community, the Secretary-General said in his congratulatory letter.

CARICOM seeks Portugal’s advocacy on major concerns

As the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continues to lobby for the removal of Member States from the list of non-cooperative tax jurisdictions, Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on Friday raised the issue with newly accredited Ambassador of Portugal to CARICOM His Excellency Fernando Teles Fazendeiro.
