As Guyana prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Independence on Thursday 26 May, 2016, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said that the country could be “justly proud of its achievements and progress over the five decades of Independence.”
The Guyana Reparations Committee on Friday launched its leg of the International Youth Reparations Relay and Rally with an event at the Guyana Independence Park. Speakers at the launch included President of Guyana H. E. David Granger and Chairman, Guyana Reparations Committee, Mr. Eric Phillips.
In his keynote address, President Granger said the call for Reparations was serious business and not a side show. He said the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was one of the greatest un-natural disasters of all time and a crime against humanity.
A Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) sponsored study on maritime ports in the region is recommending a major overhaul in policies; significant increase in investments to fast-track modernization; more private sector leadership, and greater focus among the Bank’s Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs) on improving efficiency.
The study is also proposing that Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) countries examine and explore a regional port strategy given the limited volumes being handled in some ports.
The Caribbean Export Development Agency signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Latin Chamber of Commerce of the USA. The agreement forms the basis for the strengthening of investment and trade promotion and facilitation and develop reciprocal cooperation between the US based entities and the member states of Caribbean Export which includes CARIFORUM countries.
Port of Spain, CCJ – The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has signed an Agreement of Cooperation with ACP Legal Association, which is based in Guadeloupe and executes the Organisation for Harmonisation of Business Law in the Caribbean (OHADAC) Project, at the Court’s headquarters in Port of Spain.

LONDON, CMC – The Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Belize is calling for a peaceful and final resolution of the longstanding disagreements concerning the border between Belize and Guatemala.
In a statement, the Committee, chaired by Barbados Foreign Minister Maxine McClean, said it met earlier this week to discuss the recent events that took place in the Adjacency Zone between the two countries that resulted in the death of at least one Guatemalan national.
As Dominica observes 20 years of diplomatic relations with Cuba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Francine Baron, has called for further integration of Cuba into the international community.
“Caribbean leaders continue to call for the continued integration of Cuba into the international community,” she said, at a ceremony held at the State House, on Wednesday night.
Basseterre, St. Kitts – St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Health, the Hon. Eugene Hamilton said that there was no greater threat to our health security than vectors and the diseases they transmit. He noted this at the second Workshop to Develop a Regional Network on Research and Control of Emerging Vector-Bourne Diseases in the Caribbean being held in St. Kitts from May 17 – 20.
Vectors are disease-carrying organisms such as the aedes aegypti mosquito or mice.
