CARICOM MINISTERS IN FACT FINDING MISSION TO TCI

DRAFT EPA MODEL BILLS UP FOR CONSIDERATION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Legislative drafters from regional states signatory to the Caribbean Forum of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (CARIFORUM)-European Union (EU) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) are to meet on 26-28 June in Grenada, to discuss draft Model Bills to give effect to provisions of the Agreement.

PLANS UNDERWAY FOR CWA 2013 IN GEORGETOWN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Preparations are moving apace for the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) which will be held in Georgetown, Guyana in October.

CWA 2013, the twelfth edition of the Region’s premier agricultural event, will be hosted by the Government of Guyana, 4-12 October, 2013, under the theme `Linking the Caribbean for Regional Food and Nutrition Security and Rural Development’. Emphasis will be placed on fisheries and forestry.

Renewable Energy: World Invests $244 billion in 2012, Geographic Shift to Developing Countries

The sister publications, REN21’s Renewables 2013 Global Status Report and Frankfurt School – UNEP/BNEF’s Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2013 were launched June 12th, 2013.

Global demand for renewable energy continued to rise during 2011 and 2012, supplying an estimated 19% of global final energy consumption in 2011 (the latest year for which data are available), with a little less than half from traditional biomass.

WTO HEAD CALL FOR CLOSER CARICOM INTEGRATION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Director General of the World Trade Organisation Mr Pascal Lamy has emphasised that the Region needs closer integration.

Speaking at the launch of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Aid for Trade Strategy in Port au Prince, Haiti on Tuesday, Mr Lamy said the strategy sought to build on the promise of a Region free of barriers by identifying transformative projects that support closer integration.

Lamy: “Aid for Trade to support closer Caribbean integration”

Director-General Pascal Lamy, at the launch of the Caribbean Regional Aid For Trade Strategy in Port au Prince, Haiti on 11 June 2013, said: “Today intra-Caribbean trade stands at just 13% which, as CARICOM itself notes, is on average, at 46 % below its trade potential. There are tremendous opportunities for increasing the role of trade in the region’s growth. The strategy we are launching today, with its focus on maritime transport, ICT and energy will be a central pillar in supporting closer economic integration.” This is what he said:

Aid for Trade is a sub-set of official development assistance. In the broadest sense it refers to the flow of development finance/aid from developed countries and multilateral funding agencies to developing countries to enhance their participation in the multilateral trading system.
