Statement by the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Irwin LaRocque On the Occasion of International Women’s Day, 8 March 2014

The Secretariat is honoured and privileged to salute the women and girls of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2014.  This year’s United Nation’s theme ‘Equality for Women is Progress for All’, is one that we can all embrace as we examine our progress toward meeting the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and, in particular, Goals 3 and 5 relating to gender equality and maternal health respectively.

FOCUS ON 25TH INTERSESSIONAL MEETING – MARCH 10-11 ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY ON SITUATION IN UKRAINE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)      The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is deeply concerned by the recent developments in Ukraine and calls on all parties involved, to act with self-restraint and responsibility in order to reduce tensions and avoid destabilisation in that region.

CARICOM and Canada Assist Suriname to Incorporate Regional Integration and the CSME into School Curricula

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Approximately four hundred teachers in Suriname will be trained on the operations of the Caribbean Community and CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). The sessions begin on Monday 3 March, 2014 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Paramaribo and will run until 24 March, 2014. The activity in Suriname falls under the CARICOM Trade and Competitiveness Project (CTCP) and its Information Flows component. The CTCP is executed by the CARICOM Secretariat with the assistance of Canada.

Regional Energy Officials Meet to Chart the way forward for REETA Project

The CARICOM-German Government Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance (REETA) Project was the focus of discussion by the Region’s Energy Officials from 11-12 February at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters, Guyana.

Representatives of Member States and other key stakeholders in the Community’s energy sector met to chart the way forward for a renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) project funded by the German Government through its Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (German Society for International Cooperation) (GIZ).

`There is power in unity’ – Botswana Ambassador to CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)    A strong working relationship between Botswana and the Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) would go a long way to ensuring growth and a stronger voice on issues which concern them such as climate change, gender equality and the fight against terrorism and nuclear disarmament, Her Excellency Bernadette Rathedi said on Thursday.

Excellency, I wish to welcome you to the Headquarters of the Caribbean Community as you present your Letters of Credence as the first Plenipotentiary Representative of Botswana.

I have no doubt that your wealth of experience as a practitioner of diplomacy and representative of your country, in Europe, and now in the Caribbean and Latin America, will be applied accordingly, as you carry out the duties which have been entrusted to you by your Government.

Representatives of Faith Based Organizations across the Caribbean Community.  I think it is appropriate that I commence with a few words from the Good Book which guides our beliefs. 

“Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133). “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and fortress” (Psalm 91).
