Arrival Statement: CARICOM Election Observation Mission in St. Vincent and the Grenadines

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The eight-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Election Observation Mission for the St. Vincent and the Grenadines General Elections on  Wednesday, 9 December 2015 has  been engaging various groups and institutions since its Members began arriving in the country  on 4 December. The Mission is headed by Mr. Gasper Jn. Baptiste, Chief Elections Officer of Saint Lucia.

 

CARICOM to Mount Election Observation Mission for St. Vincent Elections

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will mount a CARICOM Electoral Observation Mission to monitor the general elections to be held in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday 9 December 2015.

The Chief of Mission is Mr. Gasper Jn Baptiste, Chief Elections Officer in St. Lucia. The other members of the Mission come from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica.  They will be accompanied by a two-member CARICOM Secretariat support team.

CARICOM mourns passing of regional stalwart and OCC recipient

CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque has expressed the Region’s sadness at the passing of Trinidadian Kamaluddin Mohammed, the 2012 recipient of the Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC).

The Secretary-General, in a message of condolence, recalled that Kamal  had come to be called Mr. CARIFTA due to his dedication to the building of that process, in particular, his championing of a Caribbean Economic Community’.

The former Minister of West Indian Affairs and Minister of CARICOM Affairs died in his homeland on Tuesday night at the age of 88.

CARICOM congratulates new Commonwealth SG

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended congratulations to Dominica-born Baroness Patricia Scotland on her election as Commonwealth Secretary-General.

Baroness Scotland’s election came on the opening day of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta, Friday.

Stakes are high for CARICOM at COP21

 “Unless we can get the countries that are the major emitters of green house gases to commit to more ambitious reductions, the Caribbean will be confronted with more extreme storms and hurricanes, more frequent and prolonged droughts, dangerous sea-level rise that will wash away roads, homes, hotels, and ports in every island; greater food insecurity and more acidic oceans that will kill our corals, damage our fish stock and negatively impact our tourism industries.”
