PAHO says it has strong strategy to support countries affected by Zika

WASHINGTON, United States, Friday June 24, 2016 – The long-term outlook for the Americas resulting from the Zika virus outbreak is uncertain and the number of people affected is difficult to gauge, but the Pan American Health Organization is responding with a strong, four-tiered strategy to support its countries, according to Dr. Sylvain Aldighieri, PAHO’s incident manager for Zika.

St Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Hon Dr Ralph Gonsalves believes another year of consultations is possible before a regional decision is made on the decriminalisation of medical marijuana and small quantities of the drug.

This even as the Regional Marijuana Commission is expected to deliver its report to Caricom next month on the controversial issue which has drawn widespread debate including here in Cayman.

Community involvement key in eliminating zika-carrying mosquito

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 23, 2016 (SKNIS): Retired entomologist Dr. Sam Rawlins has emphasized that every individual has a key role to play in the elimination of the aedes aegypti mosquito, which is responsible for transmitting the zika virus from one individual to another.

 

“For effective control, there is need for mobilizing the community to participate in source reduction,” he said.  “All sectors need to become involved, the public and private.”

 

USAID project boosts Grenada’s resilience to climate change

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Thursday June 23, 2016 – Grenada’s capacity to mitigate climate change risks stemming from storms, hurricanes, droughts and other extreme weather events has been enhanced by a US$9.5 million Rallying the Region to Action on Climate Change (RRACC) project.

It is implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Grenada Parliament gives nod to CCJ

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, Jun 21, CMC – The Grenada Parliament Tuesday approved legislation for the island to replace the London-based privy Council with the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as its final court.

However, before Grenada could join Barbados, Dominica, Belize and Guyana that have already made the CCJ their final court, the issue will have to go before its citizens in a referendum, the date for which has not yet been announced. However it is most likely to be held by December this year.

PAHO executive discussing plans for improving health in the region

WASHINGTON, Jun 22, CMC – The Executive Committee of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is meeting in Jamiaca to discuss strategies and plans to improve health in the Americas, including the Caribbean.

Three Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries – Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas and Antigua and Barbuda – are members of the Committee, whose 158th meeting ends on Friday.
