Chile’s President arrives in Guyana for meetings with CARICOM Heads

Chile’s President, Michelle Bachelet, today arrived in Guyana as the 37th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Governments of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) opened in Georgetown.

President Bachelet was received at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport by Guyana’s Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo along with her delegation of approximately 70 persons.

Guyana leads CARICOM states in agri produce supply

Guyana scored the highest in consistency of supply of agriculture produce, excellent market locations and market hours, in a recent study that assessed market adequacy for fresh agriculture produce in Barbados, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Warning for Caribbean countries as a result of food-borne illnesses

NASSAU, Bahamas, Jul 2, CMC – A senior official of the Trinidad-based Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) says the economic costs associated with food-borne illnesses in the Caribbean are “very high” and can range anywhere from two to US$40 million annually.

“When we look at the Caribbean, the average annual cost associated with food-borne illnesses is $21 million. That is sometimes more than the entire budgets of some Caribbean countries,” said CARPHA’s Programme Manager for Tourism and Health Programmes, Surveillance Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Lisa Indar.

‘A true Champion!’ CARICOM pays tribute to the late Patrick Manning

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has hailed the late former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Mr. Patrick Manning as one of its true Champions.

Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque in a Statement issued Saturday said Mr. Manning believed in integration and was genuinely committed to it.  His  contributions to the Community included  strong leadership roles in health and security, the Statement noted.

Prepare for impact of Brexit but don’t panic, CARICOM told

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thursday June 30, 2016 – A University of the West Indies (UWI) forum held yesterday to discuss the impact of the UK’s pending exit from the European Union brought some advice for CARICOM – prepare for the potential fallout. At the same, there’s a suggestion that there won’t be any crisis.

During the forum, the UWI Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary Beckles offered recommendations to CARICOM in response to the development, popularly referred to as Brexit.
