PM Harris says country will stick by the laws

The law of the land is clear, before any decision to legalize marijuana is made, there must be consultations with relevant stakeholders in civil society to decide, Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris said during the government’s town hall meeting. The prime minister’s remarks were in response to increasing pressure from the Rastafarian community to legalize marijuana.

Guyana seeks technical support for oil and gas take-off

PRESIDENT David Granger on Thursday held discussions with top oil and gas officials of Trinidad and Tobago during a meeting at his Shiv Chanderpaul Drive office. T&T Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Ms. Nicole Olivierre and Deputy Permanent Secretary in her ministry, Mr. Andre Laveau, met with Mr. Granger and Guyana’s Minister of Natural Resources, Mr Raphael Trotman.

The Head of State said that as Guyana prepares to harness its oil and gas potential, the country is looking forward to technical support and cooperation from its CARICOM sister state.

CARICOM Athletes at Rio Olympics 2016 demonstrate Region’s capacity to lead

In a congratulatory message to the athletes from CARICOM Member States at the just-concluded Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, CARICOM Secretary-General. Ambassador Irwin LaRocque stated their performance has demonstrated that the Region had the capacity to lead the world in any sphere, provided that the necessary discipline, commitment and focus” were applied.

CAPE performance remains consistent in 2016

Performance in the 2016 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) remained consistent with that of the past five years. Approximately 90 per cent of the entries achieved Grades I-V, which are the acceptable grades at CAPE.

Thirteen per cent of the entries achieved Grade I, just under 20 per cent achieved Grade II, 23 per cent achieved Grade III, 20 per cent Grade IV and 14 per cent achieved Grade V.

‘All of humanity is part of this story,’ UNESCO says on Day to remember slavery and its abolition

23 August 2016 – The courage of the men and women who in August 1791 revolted against slavery in Haiti “has created obligations for us,” the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said on the day set aside for remembrance of that rebellion, noting that “all of humanity is part of this story” and efforts to teach the history of the slave trade will help build a better world.

Caribbean exporters urged to strengthen food safety systems

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Aug. 18, CMC – Food manufacturers from across the region have been encouraged to strengthen food safety methods to achieve a greater level of international market access and trade.

During a two-day workshop here, representatives from across the region were urged to raise their standards.

The sub-regional workshop on “Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Plan Development and Implementation” was attended by private sector participants from Guyana, Haiti, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

Training for CARICOM’s Primary Disaster Relief Unit

32 participants from the disciplined forces, including police, military and fire services, successfully completed four days of training in preparation for their role in providing relief and humanitarian assistance in the event of a disaster. The annual training workshop of the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) was held at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency’s (CDEMA) headquarters in Barbados from August 8th to 12th 2016.
