Micro-business sector best hope for immediate job growth – Kellier

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Labour Minister Derrick Kellier, on Wednesday, said that the Government was committed to providing the necessary funding support for the small- and micro-business sector.
Kellier, who announced an increase in the amount of funds provided from the National Investment Fund (NIF), under its small- and medium-enterprise credit facility, said mega-investment projects are unlikely to reduce the country's unemployment numbers in the short term.

Kenya votes to quit global court, days before deputy president’s trial

AMSTERDAM/NAIROBI, (Reuters) – Kenya’s parliament voted yesterday to quit the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, but the Hague-based tribunal said it would press ahead anyway with the trials of the country’s president and his deputy.
Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto are accused of orchestrating violence after elections in 2007. About 1,200 people were killed in ethnic blood-letting that plunged east Africa’s biggest economy into crisis.

Brazil cancels advance team trip for state visit to U.S.

BRASILIA, (Reuters) – Brazil has canceled a trip by an advance team to Washington to prepare for a visit by President Dilma Rousseff that might be called off after revelations the United States spied on her private communications.
Brazil’s presidential palace said yesterday it canceled a trip by an advance team of logistical planners, security personnel and protocol officers that was due to leave for Washington this weekend to start preparing the Oct. 23 state visit. No reason was given for the cancellation.

At a summit of the Group of 20 (G20) developed and developing economies in St. Petersburg, Putin greeted Obama with a thin smile and a businesslike handshake, a clear sign of the strains between them over how to respond to a chemical weapons attack in Syria.

Gary Griffith appointed T&T National Security Minister in Cabinet shake-up

(Trinidad Express) Gary Griffith has been appointed National Security Minister, becoming the fourth person to hold the critical post, since the Peoples Partnership took power three years ago.
The announcement was made today by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar when she addressed a post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, Port of Spain.
Former National Security Minister Emmanuel George is now the Minister of Justice, replacing Christlyn Moore.

NEW YORK, CMC – A Grenadian American legislator has added his voice to those condemning an incident that resulted in the death of a 16-month-old toddler of Trinidadian parentage on Sunday night. “Like most New Yorkers, I am horrified to hear of the murder of Antiq Hennis,” New York City Councilman Jumaane D. Williams, co-chair of the New York City Council's Task Force to Combat Gun Violence, told the Caribbean Media Corporation on Thursday. “His death is a stain on the City's soul,” added Williams, who represents the predominantly Caribbean 45th Council District in Brooklyn.

JAMAICA-AGRICULTURE-Roads in sugar dependent communities to be rehabilitated

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - Eight contracts totaling just over J$404 million (One Jamaica dollar = US$0.01 cents) have been signed for the rehabilitation of more than 44 kilometres of cane roads in seven sugar-dependent communities across the island.
The road works, which will be undertaken in the central parishes of St. Catherine and Clarendon, the western parish of Westmoreland, the northern parish of Trelawny and the eastern parish of St. Thomas come under the Cane Roads Rehabilitation Project in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The Prime Minister announced the changes to her Cabinet at a post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday afternoon.

GUYANA-POLITICS-High level security sector delegation to meet in Suriname

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana and Suriname will begin high level security talks on Friday.
The two-day meeting is being is being held under the Presidential Engagement Initiative, the brainchild of former Guyana president Bharrat Jagdeo and Surinamese Head of State, Desi Bouterse. The last meeting of this nature was held in 2011.
