Tit-for-tat as “emailgate” scandal continues unabated

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar has accused Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley of breaching established conventions in the latest tit-for-tat over the “emailgate” scandal that continues to stir political emotions in Trinidad and Tobago.

Caribbean Wellness Day 2013

This year, Caribbean Wellness Day will be observed on Saturday, 14 September and it marks the sixth anniversary of the initiative. Inaugurated in 2008, Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) is an annual event, observed on the second Saturday of September.

Those intent on recommitting violent criminal and drug-related offences will not be eligible for bail. This was the recommendation the Government put forward to Opposition members at yesterday’s crime talks at the International Waterfront Centre, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain. Those who attended were Opposition whip Marlene McDonald, PNM vice-chairman Camille Robinson-Regis and Opposition senators Fitzgerald Hinds and Terrence Deyalsingh.

Gopee-Scoon: Syrian conflict can impact on Caribbean

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Former Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon says the worsening Syrian crisis can impact negatively on members of the local Syrian and Lebanese community. But Andy Knight, director of the Institute of International Relations at UWI, St Augustine campus believes the repercussions would be minimal to this country. Gopee-Scoon, the Member of Parliament for Point Fortin and Knight views were sought in the face of military action being contemplated by the United States led coalition. 

T&T finalises new gas deal with Venezuela

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian -  T&T and Venezuela have reached a deal to jointly produce gas from fields located between the two countries, Venezuelan Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez said. According to a Prensa Latina report, Venezuelan state-owned oil giant Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and Chevron Corp will produce the gas from unified offshore fields that contain nearly 12 trillian cubic feet of natural gas.

Rowley in knocking large Cabinet says: Return to polls only solution Leader of the Opposition

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian -  - Dr Keith Rowley says yesterday’s Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar was the clearest evidence of her People’s Partnership Government’s collapse in office, adding a return to the polls was the only option for T&T. “The Government has collapsed and the Prime Minister is totally out of her depth. The recent statement and Cabinet reshuffle provides all the proof we need,” Rowley said in a statement yesterday.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday promoted Gary Griffith, her former national security adviser, to the post of National Security Minister, “fired” two ministers and reshuffled and split the portfolios of several United National Congress (UNC) frontliners in her third Cabinet reshuffle. Griffith, who replaced Emmanuel George, former state board chairman Gerald Hadeed and one-time senator Raziah Ahmed will be brought into the Parliament as People’s Partnership (PP) senators.

Jamaica lobby at Warsaw climate talks critical – Mahlung

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - JAMAICA MUST this year push for not only "adequate and predictable" financing, but also for further work on the international mechanism on loss and damage, to protect it and other vulnerable countries from slow-onset events such as ocean acidification.
So said Clifford Mahlung, one of the island's seasoned climate negotiators and the Latin America and Caribbean representative on the Adaptation Committee of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
His comments come ahead of the Warsaw climate talks set for later this year.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - AS THE Obama administration might have noticed, their man, Joe Biden, the vice-president, was not the star attraction in Port-of-Spain in late May when he visited for talks with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders.
That was reserved, a few days later, for Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader.
Mr Xi played to his billing. He announced US$3 billion in loans and grants to Caribbean countries and talked up Sino-Caribbean relations. "China holds very dear our relationship with the Caribbean region from a strategic perspective," he said.

Private sector doubtful of IMF programme’s success

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Gleaner - Sections of the private sector remain sceptical about the chances of success of Jamaica's 48-month extended fund facility (EFF) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), despite confirmation that policy implementation was strong in the first quarter of the programme.
The Economic Programme Oversight Committee (EPOC), in a communiqué issued following a meeting on Wednesday, said that in discussions with IMF and government officials, members expressed concern that economic growth continued to elude Jamaica.
