US and UK governments announce humanitarian aid for storm-ravaged Dominica

The United States and the United Kingdom governments are sending personnel and humanitarian aid to assist in Dominica’s ongoing recovery effort on the heels of the destructive Tropical Storm Erika.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), through its Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), said today that it is providing disaster relief support to the storm-ravaged island.

Barbados To Lend Support To Dominica

Barbados will be lending support to neighbouring island Dominica which sustained significant damage following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika on Thursday.

CARIFESTA XII closes on a high!

The twelfth edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts CARIFESTA XII has come to a close. The ten-day mega cultural event ended with a closing ceremony at the Kiosque Ocide Jeanty in Champs Mas, Haiti on Sunday night. The night’s activities included a culmination of performances from various Caribbean groups that have performed throughout the festival. There were also closing speeches from  President of Haiti, H.E. Michel Martelly, Minister of Culture of Barbados Hon, Stephen Lashley – representing CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Barbados Rt. Hon.

Transport Ministers from 54 countries call for global policies to mainstream low-carbon transport

Transport Ministers participating in the International Transport Forum (ITF) Annual Summit agreed in their Declaration from Ministers on Transport, Trade and Tourism on the value of pursuing low-carbon transport towards COP21.

 

Specifically, they

“Recognize that the new international climate agreement, which is to be forged and agreed by COP21, should encourage mainstreaming of low carbon transport in global policies on climate change and sustainable development.”

China funding half billion US-dollar university hospital project in Jamaica

The University of the West Indies (UWI) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), for a J$60 billion (US$511 million) development programme that will include the expansion of the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) from a 500-bed to a 1,000-bed facility.

A new beginning for Dominica- PM Skerrit

Prime minister Skerrit has described as heart wrenching, the loss of life from the devastating passage of Tropical storm Erika.

Erika hit the island on Thursday August 28, 2015 and caused, in the words of the prime minister, “extensive damage across our small island after floods swamped villages, destroyed homes and wiped out roads.”

However, he said in an address  to the nation on Friday night, that the loss of life is of greatest concern.

Beloved Dominicans, I have been assessing the damage all day. The extent of the devastation is monumental. It is far worse than expected. It is true that many communities like Petite Savanne, Delices and Coulibistrie have been swamped and are still cut off from the rest of Dominica, but nearly every community has been hit.

There is extensive damage across our small island after floods swamped villages, destroyed homes and wiped out roads. Some communities are no longer recognizable.
