Barbados PM-CARICOM Chair – upcoming Commonwealth and COP21 Meetings important

“Mr. Stuart said the potential outcomes of the Paris discussions would be important to Barbados and the CARICOM region, given the projected adverse effects climate change would have on the countries.”
The Prime Minister pointed out that the CARICOM Heads of Government at their meeting earlier this year in Barbados adopted a Declaration for Climate Action, which sets out the region’s agreed negotiating positions. He added that the Declaration asserts that the Heads “look forward to the adoption for the first time of a universal, legally binding agreement at the COP 21”.

Caribbean Environmental Experts Seek Solutions for Climate Change and Public Health Challenges

Castries, Saint Lucia - The Caribbean, mainly comprised of small island nations, is the world’s most tourist-dependent region, and one of the most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change.  Within recent times, the Region has experienced more frequent and severe storms and hurricanes, increases in mosquito-borne diseases, rises in sea level, prolonged periods of drought and salt water intrusion of coastal groundwater sources, which pose a significant threat to human health.

CARICOM condemns Paris terrorist attacks

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks against innocent civilians in Paris.

 CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, in a message of condolence, also extended the Community’s deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends of those who lost their lives. The SG wished a speedy recovery to those who were wounded in the tragic events.

 At least 129 people were reported dead and more than 350 wounded in the attacks across several parts of the French capital on Friday.

COTED concludes in Georgetown

The two-day Meeting of the Forty-First Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) concluded on Friday in Georgetown, Guyana.

A special session with representatives of the Region’s private sector led the Meeting’s heavy agenda which also included deliberations on progress related to the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), and external economic and trade matters. There were also discussions on health matters, particularly with regard to the effects of non communicable diseases on the Region’s workforce.

The private sector’s importance in Regional growth and development was the highlight of remarks made at the opening ceremony of the Council for Trade and Economic Development’s Forty-First Meeting in Georgetown, Guyana.

Trade Ministers and representatives of the private sector of the Region continued their engagement at a special session immediately following the opening ceremony.

Zika Virus Reaches the Caribbean Community

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, November 12, 2015.  On November 09, 2015, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) confirmed five (5) case of Zika virus in a territory of the Caribbean Community.  Earlier this year, suspected cases of the mosquito-borne disease were reported in Brazil and the Dominican Republic.

 

Caribbean gets first Tourism and Hospitality investment guide

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), in association with the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), has produced the first Caribbean Tourism and Hospitality Investment Guide targeted at international investors.

The publication showcases a wide range of investment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality sector in CTO member states and lists incentives that Caribbean Governments are offering to attract new business.
