Gonsalves currently wears two hats pertaining to regional air transport— he is chairman of the shareholders group for island-hopping airline LIAT and he has lead responsibility among Caricom Heads of Government for air and sea transportation.

URGENT - TOBAGO-ACCIDENT-Five killed in early morning vehicular accident

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago, CMC – Five people were killed in a two car smash up along the Claude Noel Highway during the early hours of Sunday morning, police said.
They have identified those killed as Alloy Duke, Fernando Stewart, Christian Stewart, Anesha Hamilton and Stephen Winchester, but gave no further details on the accident which has marred the 2013 Carnival celebrations on the sister isle.
They said investigations were continuing.

CDB president warns 7 nations on rising debt

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express- PRESIDENT OF the Caribbean Development (CDB) Dr Warren Smith yesterday warned member countries of the regional institution to avoid facing their own "fiscal cliff"-as happened to the United States-by moving vigorously to reduce their "mounting" debt stock. At least seven borrowing countries currently confront this economic challenge.

CARIBBEAN-EARTHQUAKE-Trinidad, Grenada and Jamaica rattled by earthquake

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 and depth of 110 km rattled sections of Trinidad early Sunday morning. It’s reported that the tremor was also felt in Grenada. The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies (UWI) said the quake occurred at 1:27 (local time) . It said the quake occurred north of the Paria Peninsula in Trinidad.

Rare 100-mile wave spotted off T&T

(Trinidad Guardian) A huge, rarely-seen 100-mile long internal wave has been spotted near the north coast of Trinidad. A photo released two days ago by the International Space Station (ISS) shows the presence of the natural phenomenon which has largely gone undetected in T&T.
An article from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Observatory has defined “internal waves” as “the surface manifestation of slow waves that move tens of metres beneath the sea surface.”

Caribbean’s first sextuplets due next month

(Trinidad Express) A 28-year-old Central woman will create history in Trinidad and Tobago and the region when she delivers the Caribbean’s first sextuplets. And, just yesterday, another woman was admitted to Mt Hope Women’s Hospital with quadruplets. The young woman who will deliver the six babies was all smiles yesterday at Mt Hope where, in a brief interview with the media, she said she was ready to bring her bundles of joy into this world.

Caribbean organisations call for air passenger tax removal

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - Richard J Doumeng, president, Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA), and Beverly Nicholson-Doty, chairman, Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism, are supporting a recent study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) which shows that the abolition of the UK’s Air Passenger Duty (APD) could bring a lasting boost to the UK economy, generating a net tax gain for the Treasury and creating almost 60,000 new jobs.

To boost regional security US marine general visits T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - United States marine corps general John Kelly, commander of US southern command, who visited Port-of-Spain yesterday, said he was delighted to have met with the Government and defence leaders on his Caribbean visit. Kelly met with prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, national security Minister Jack Warner, foreign affairs minister Winston Dookeran and members of the T&T Defence Force led by chief of defence staff, Maj Gen Kenrick Maharaj.
