TRINIDAD-COURT-Former Miss Universe sued

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The coalition People’s Partnership government has filed a suit against former Miss Universe, Wendy Fitzwilliam alleging that she failed to properly advise the directors of a state-owned company on whether to enter into a TT$30 million (One TT dollar = US$0.16 cents) investment in 2005 with the China-based Bamboo Network Ltd (BNL).

Judge to give ruling before end of March

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – High Court judge Mira Dean-Armorer says she expects to deliver before March 29, a judgement in the case in which several people, including former government ministers and two financiers of the ruling United National Congress (UNC) are challenging the decision of the State to repeal legislation they said would have prevented them from facing fraud related charges stemming more than 10 years ago.

Media queries qualification of Commissioner

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Jan 30, CMC – One of the five members of a Commission of Inquiry probing the activities that led to the 1990 attempted overthrow of the Trinidad and Tobago government by members of the radical Muslim group, the Jamaat Al-Muslimeen, has asked to be excused after one newspaper queried his qualifications.
The Trinidad Guardian newspaper said that Dr Hafizool Ali Mohammed had “obtained his doctorate of science (DSc) in international relations from Atlantic International University (AIU), which is described by various Web sites as a diploma mill.

House pays tribute to former MP Sam Lawrence

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - FORMER EAST Portland Member of Parliament (MP) Sam Lawrence was yesterday remembered by the House of Representatives for his contribution to Jamaica's legislative process. Opposition MP Karl Samuda, who served with Lawrence as MP between 1989 and 1997, and Government member Fitz Jackson, who entered the House in 1994, recalled that Lawrence was instrumental in getting the Cabinet to consider the wishes of the House. Jackson, MP for South St Catherine, said by moving a resolution which was passed by the House, issues from Parliament found their way to Cabinet.

Government pleased with performance of local economy

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC –The Trinidad and Tobago government says it is pleased with the performance of the local economy and welcomed recent ratings by the US based rating agencies regarding the economic outlook for the oil-rich twin island republic.
Finance Minister Larry Howai, wrapping up debate on the Finance Bill on Monday night, Howai said that the government’s economic policies are working in spite of criticism from the opposition.

COTED to meet in Trinidad

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) will hold a meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in March to examine energy issues in the region, according to Energy and Energy Affairs Minister Kevin Ramnarine
Ramnarine addressing the 2013 Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference said that the March 1 COTED meeting would “bring together ministers with responsibility for energy for one day to discuss a way forward for the Caribbean with respect to energy”.

Global economic growth slowed in 2011 and 2012

Some of the biggest risks facing the world economy—the breakup of the euro currency, huge tax increases and government spending cuts in the United States, and a sharp slowdown in China—were avoided last year. Manning must declare himself unfit to continue

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Without wanting to seem ungrateful and unmindful of the 40-plus years of Mr Patrick Manning’s service to this country as MP, energy minister, finance minister and Prime Minister, after being on sick leave for a year from the Parliament, it is time that he gives definitive word that he may be unfit to finish this term of office. In doing so, he would be clearing the way for a by-election and a fully capable MP to attend to the needs of constituents of San Fernando East.
