Duprey doesn’t want to be questioned on CLICO

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Despite initially confirming that he would attend the ongoing CLICO commission of enquiry, former head of CLICO Lawrence Duprey is now backing out. According to the Trinidad Guardian, the 79-year-old business magnate has written a letter to the commission, which was received yesterday by its secretary Judith Gonzalez, to say he is unwilling to appear before the commission chaired by British QC Sir Anthony Colman to give evidence.

T&T Agricultural produce to be available on Caribbean market

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (Trinidad Guardian) – Food Production Minister Devant Maharaj said more of T&T’s agricultural produce may soon be available in Caribbean market. At the re-commissioning of the Orange Valley Wholesale Fish Market in Couva yesterday, Maharaj said Namdevco will soon start construction of five packing houses at the cost of $8 million each. He said the packing houses will absorb local produce with the objective of selling the excess to customers in regional markets.

THA must forge new ties with gov’t

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - There is no minority leader but this is not going to prevent the victorious Orville London-led slate from the PNM’s Tobago Council from being inaugurated as the new Tobago House of Assembly tomorrow. “My lawyers have said there is nothing to prevent the THA from functioning without a minority leader and a minority council.” London said yesterday, as questions arose as to whether the THA Act allowed an assembly to be constituted without a minority leader in the wake of the PNM’s 12-0 sweep over the Tobago Organisation of the People in Monday’s THA election.

PM says she has no quarrel with Integrity Commission

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar says she has “no quarrel” with the Integrity Commission after it wrote President George Maxwell Richards seeking its support following open criticism from the head of the coalition government in Trinidad and Tobago.
In a statement, the Commission made reference to remarks by Prime Minister Persad Bissessar that it had “an appearance of bias” as she campaigned on behalf of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) during the just concluded Tobago House of assembly (THA) elections.

Cadiz in Bahamas for regional airlift talks

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Minister of Tourism Stephen Cadiz is in the Bahamas for the Caribbean Travel Marketplace and to convene with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) Aviation Committee and discuss opportunities for increase of airlift to the region.
The minister, upon landing at the Lyndon Pindling International Airport, headed directly to a meeting of the Council of Tourism Ministers and Commissioners of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort.

‘TCL can’t keep raising prices’

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL) cannot just keep raising prices every year, ANSA McAL's chief operating officer Gerry Brooks has said.
Brooks told reporters on Friday at the ANSA Coatings Award ceremony, Hyatt Regency (Trinidad) hotel, Port of Spain that what the company needs is a restructuring plan with a clear business plan.
Brooks said the company needs to tackle two of its most pressing problems: debt and material cost.

EU continues to fund Caribbean projects
