Rowley: Remove ‘unfit’ Persad as security head

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express- Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley is calling for the removal of Senior Superintendent Surajdeen Persad as a director of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
"It is quite unacceptable that a police officer could have behaved in the way that he did, with respect to what has been exposed in the public domain—where he was listing persons within the security agency whom he believed were supporters of a political party," Rowley said in a telephone interview yesterday.

ARREST POWERS FOR ARMY

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express- Plans announced recently by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and National Security Minister Jack Warner to give similar powers to the Defence Force as those of police officers are set to go a step further today.
Legislation to give members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) authority to function and perform the duties of a police officer will be laid in the Parliament today.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago government has announced plans to give soldiers powers similar to that of the police as it moves to crack down on an escalation of crime in the country.
The coalition People’s Partnership government is tabling legislation Friday that will give members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) authority to function and perform the duties of a police officer.

Govt to spend US$3b on maritime projects

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Government is embarking on two major maritime projects as a cost of US$3 billion. This is just one of the several initiatives aimed at creating an investment climate for trade to take place. Trade Minister Vasant Bharath announced when he addressed a conference on Improving the Ease of Doing Business in T&T at the Hyatt Regency in Port-of-Spain. He said his ministry is on an aggressive path of putting T&T on the world stage and the two projects are being funded by two local private sector companies with an international presence.

Royal Dutch Shell buys into T&T energy sector

(Trinidad Express) Europe’s largest oil company Royal Dutch Shell once more has a significant stake in Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector. The company said yesterday it has struck a deal with Spain’s Repsol SA to buy Repsol’s liquefied natural gas assets in Trinidad and Tobago and Peru in a deal worth US$6.2 billion. Shell said it would pay $4.4 billion in cash and assume $1.8 billion in Repsol debt and other obligations.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – A pastor with the Seventh Day Adventist Church is claiming that Latin American assassins are operating in Trinidad and Tobago and called for an all out war on crime. “We have Latin American assassins in this country. We have Colombians in this society, hired by the godfathers who have the art of slicing heads and legs, training secondary school students to do the same thing in this society,” Pastor Clive Dottin said at the funeral for police sergeant Hayden Manwaring, who was shot and killed by bandits last week.

Constituents thank God for Manning

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Former prime minister Patrick Manning stood for more than an hour yesterday as members of his San Fernando East Constituency Office held a special thanksgiving ceremony for him. Manning, who spent Thursday night at the San Fernando General Hospital after suffering another seizure, walked into the National Academy for Performing Arts’ (Napa) south campus at San Fernando unaided by his cane. He was escorted by his wife and former Education minister Hazel Manning along with sons Brian and David Manning.
