This Antigua political saga

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - AS the saying goes, in party politics “all things are possible”—including, of course, success and defeat at free and fair elections and, by extension, related court rulings. Within the past two days, two opposition parties—one in Dominica, the other in Antigua and Barbuda—had to contend with this reality based on separate court decisions.

Prof Spence: An outstanding Caribbean citizen

As a UWI lecturer, public servant and independent senator, even in his retirement years his vast knowledge added value and inspired positive developments, not only in his area of expertise—agriculture—but in many other matters of national importance.

Former academic and legislator dies

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Former academic and legislator, Professor John Spence has died. He was 83.
Relatives said that he died of a heart attack late Wednesday.
Spence was a Professor of Botany and also Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and served as an Independent Senator from 1987 to 2000. He was also awarded the Chaconia Medal Gold in 1980.

Kamla in Caracas to attend funeral today

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will be in Venezuela today to attend the funeral of president Hugo Chavez. Persad-Bissessar left Trinidad at 4.30 p.m. yesterday for Caracas and is scheduled to return home later today. Chavez's funeral is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. today.

Guyanese stock market continues to grow

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - As at December 2011, the market capitalisation of shares on the Guyana Stock market (GASCI) was G$89.48 billion. This valuation improved to G$123.41 billion as at December 2012, or by a margin of almost 38 per cent. Briefly, as at the end of October 2012, the valuation was even higher at G$125.84 billion.

CaribNET launches to better connect the Caribbean

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - A broadband fibre optic network called C@ribNET has been launched to connect tertiary institutions, schools, hospitals and other educational establishments to knowledge development and research platforms, paving the way for enhanced interconnectivity and collaboration among Caribbean states.
The historic launch took place at the National Academy for the Performing Arts Centre (NAPA), Port-of-Spain, on February 26 under the theme, Collaboration, Co-operation, Community.
