Venezuela’s President for T&T

(Trinidad Express) Trinidad yesterday announced a visit by CARICOM Heads of State, and the leaders of several other countries including the newly elected president of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro. The announcement was made by acting Communications Minister Anil Roberts at the post-Cabinet press conference, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Port of Spain.

Prime Minister hands over electronic equipment as police continue probe

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has handed over computer equipment to the police as investigations continue into allegations that she and senior members of her government were involved in a plot to undermine the judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution and the media.
During a two hour meeting with the police on Tuesday, Prime Minister Persad Bissessar, accompanied by her lawyer and Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, said it would be inappropriate to comment on the investigations.

T&T ‘hot seat’ for CARICOM

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - A WEEK from tomorrow Heads of Government of the 15-member Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) should be in Port of Spain for a three-day regular annual summit that officially gets underway on Thursday, July 4.
The historical significance of this regular summit being hosted in Port of Spain to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the regional economic integration movement is undoubtedly a proud occasion for the people and Government of Trinidad and Tobago, where CARICOM had its ceremonial inauguration at Chaguaramas.

DPP not giving update

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - DIRECTOR OF Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard SC yesterday said he would not “fall prey” to calls for an update into the criminal investigation into the criminal investigation into the collapse of CL Financial Ltd, CLICO and related subsidiaries.
In a two-page statement, Gaspard noted that questions on the status of the criminal investigation were premature as the matter was still at its investigative stage.

President names new Integrity Commission

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – President Anthony Carmona named members to the Integrity Commission on Monday, even as calls continued for the resignation of its chairman, Ken Gordon, over his decision to meet with Opposition Leader Dr. Keith Rowley before the latter presented a motion of no confidence in the Kamla Persad Bissessar administration.
President Carmona in his first major appointment since he was sworn into office in March, named the four other members to the Commission, including retired Justice Sebastien Ventour, who has had a distinguished 34-year legal career.

Cops ask PM for ‘make, type’ of electronic devices

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said yesterday police investigators have contacted her via letter requesting the “make and type” of her electronic devices. This letter, she said, was promptly handed over to her legal adviser, Israel Khan, SC. “For myself I am not au courant with that kind of lingo, the technology lingo, so I have asked my lawyer to assist me with responding to the information requested,” she said.

Bharath: CAL looking to deal with spending

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Approaches have been made to Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to initiate a Colombia/T&T/London route and a Panama/T&T/London route, Trade Minister Vasant Bharath says. At yesterday’s weekly post-Cabinet press conference Bharath said the current focus for the moment was on returning to basics and dealing with capital expenditure.

‘Govts committed to CAL/Air Jamaica union’

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The government of Trinidad and Tobago and the government of Jamaica are committed to making the Caribbean Airlines/Air Jamaica arrangement work. Therefore, both countries have set up committees to look at some of the problems affecting the CAL/Air Jamaica arrangement, Minister in the Ministry of Finance Vasant Bharath said yesterday.
