EU: T&T manufacturers to benefit from EPA

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - Local manufacturers stand to benefit from the adoption of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Cariforum and the European Union (EU), Daniela Tramacere, head of the EU delegation in Port-of-Spain said in an e-mail to the T&T Guardian. Cariforum is comprised of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) plus the Dominican Republic.

Employers’ group seeks higher Caricom status

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Guardian - The umbrella body for Caribbean employers is calling on Caribbean Community (Caricom) leaders to begin according representative labour and employer organisations “similar” status with member states. The Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL) has not gone that far, but is insisting on the return of a seat among regional leaders at their annual summit and the re-establishment of a Labour Desk at the Guyana-based Caricom secretariat.

PM wants think tank on regional security

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express - Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday suggested a “regional think tank” be established to examine multiple security threats facing the region.

She was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 34th Caricom heads of Government conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. Fourteen heads of government of the region are attending the conference.

Such an approach, she said, would also identify ways of improving cooperation between governments and law enforcement agencies in countering illicit activity in the hemisphere.

Caricom marks its 40th anniversary

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express - As Caricom marks its 40th anniversary today, its Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said last night there was much to celebrate and take pride in as an integration movement.

LaRocque, speaking at the opening ceremony of the 34th Caricom conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s, noted that 40 years ago on July 4, 1973 the Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed.

He said in that 40 years Caricom has built on that foundation and has created a base upon which a sustainable future can placed.

Caribbean can rise above challenges

It is only in the context of a properly functioning integration movement that the Caribbean region, now more closely knit than ever, can rise about the daunting challenges it now faces.

This was the message sent by Prime Minister of Barbados, The Honourable Freundel Stuart, on the occasion of the 34th Conference of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) last night in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

CARICOM-SUMMIT-Regional leaders open summit on a high note

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders began their 34th annual summit here on Wednesday night, basking in the achievements of the 40-year-old regional integration movement, but acknowledging also there is still much more to be done.

Host Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar described the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas that lead to the formation of the regional integration movement four decades ago as “a defining moment in our region’s history.

TRINIDAD-MILITARY-US engaged in joint military training with Trinidad soldiers

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The United States military is engaged in a month-long training exercise with the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) as part of the efforts to boost support for the region.

A statement from the US Embassy here said that similar training exercises and humanitarian work had been conducted in several countries including Guyana and Jamaica.

Caricom’s air transport dilemma

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express - THE CEREMONIAL opening of the 34th regular summit of the Caribbean Community takes place in Port of Spain this evening amid widening complaints across this region against deep frustration with two critically related issues—regional air transportation and hassle-free intra-regional movement for Caricom citizens. Both issues will surface on what has been described as a “heavy-loaded” agenda for the three scheduled working days, starting tomorrow, that include a special session at Chaguaramas, birth place of Caricom 40 years ago.
