T&T deflects questions on rights record of Caricom invitee

(Trinidad Express) Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran said the Trinidad and Tobago Government was not in a position to adjudicate on international human rights reports on President of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
Mbasogo, who in his capacity as head of the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) region, was one of three presidents invited to attend this week’s Caricom meeting in Port of Spain.

IICA head endorses ILO rural economy plan

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA) Victor Villalobos is endorsing a decision by International Labour Organization (ILO) head Guy Ryder to pay greater attention to the “rural economy” in the context of labour standards and rights. In an interview with T&T Guardian, Villalobos described the strategy as “very important,” since it would “help keep the best people in agriculture” and assist in promoting development in rural communities.

Grenada PM calls for Caricom free movement

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell is calling for the removal of aliens’ landholding requirements for Caricom nationals. Mitchell made the appeal during his address at Wednesday’s opening of the 34th Caricom Heads of Government Meeting at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s. He said it would be a significant first step towards the free movement of people and capital in the region.

T&T PM wants think tank on regional security

(Trinidad Express) Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday suggested a “regional think tank” be established to examine multiple security threats facing the region.
She was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 34th Caricom heads of Government conference at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s. Fourteen heads of government of the region are attending the conference.
Such an approach, she said, would also identify ways of improving cooperation between governments and law enforcement agencies in countering illicit activity in the hemisphere.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Guardian - Leaders hope for unity After 40 years, the Treaty of Chaguaramas, signed in 1973 to create Caribbean unity but still largely unsuccessful, was signed again yesterday by 15 Caricom prime ministers at the same place it was initially signed—the Convention Centre, Chaguaramas. Making a strong renewed call for Caribbean unity, the heads of government conceded at the re-enactment of the July 4, 1973, signing of the treaty that regional integration was still not where they wanted it to be.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Thursday marked its 40th anniversary boasting of being the longest surviving integration grouping among developing countries. In a message to mark the occasion, CARICOM Secretary General Irwin la Rocque said that 15-member grouping is second only to the European Union in global terms and that the “four pillars upon which our integration is built have withstood the test of time allowing us the latitude of expanding the edifice of our Community for the benefit of our people.

T&T ranks 81st in global innovation

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, Express - Trinidad and Tobago has been ranked 81 out of 142 countries in the 2013 Global Innovation Index for the second consecutive year, a statement on the Index’s official website has said. 

The country trailed 34 spots behind regional leader Barbados, ranked 47.  Guyana was three spots higher at 78; and Jamaica was one spot after at 82.
