PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has temporarily relinquished his responsibilities for the Central Authority, paving the way for the police investigating the e-mail matter to seek foreign assistance if they need it. Sources said yesterday that Ramlogan wrote to the head of the Central Authority, Netram Kowlessar, last month recusing himself from all duties and responsibilities affiliated with the investigation of the 31 e-mails raised by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley in Parliament, and delegated all responsibilities to Kowlessar.

Regional governments advised: Control use of pesticides to ensure food safety

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Caribbean governments must ensure food safety in the region is not compromised as they increase food production to meet growing consumer demands. So said Gregg Rawlins, the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA) representative in T&T, as he stressed the need to monitor pesticide use in food production.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The suspension and fine of West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin sent a firm, tough reminder that the International Cricket Council still values fair play and honesty in the gentlemen’s game, despite the ugly incidents of spotfixing and matchfixing in recent years. Trinidad minister defends local manufactures as well as Jamaican counterpart

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Trinidad and Tobago Trade and Industry Minister Vasant Bharath Tuesday defended his Jamaican counterpart, AJ Nicholson, who has come under pressure to “step aside” amid the ongoing trade dispute between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. Bharath, speaking on local radio here, described the call for Nicholson’s departure by the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA) as unfair since the existing trade relations between the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries have been going for a long time.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced yesterday this country will be able to immediately access $833 million of these funds to accelerate the development of Business/Commercial and Industrial Parks throughout Trinidad and Tobago. “We will be building seven such parks on 592.1 acres of land representing an investment of $833 million. The leasable space on the estates would be 355.7 acres.

Region mourns passing of leading agri-science expert

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad -ACADEMICS in the region are today mourning the passing of Prof Emeritus Nazeer A Ahmad, who was one of the last associates of the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (AICTA).
Ahmad was Prof Emeritus of the Department of Food Production in the Faculty of Food and Agriculture at the time of his passing on June 6.
Principal of the University of the West Indies (UWI) St Augustine Campus, Clement Sankat, in a statement on Friday, noted that Ahmad’s distinctive service included the development of the Faculty of Agriculture from a fledgling campus.
