LIAT shareholders to meet in Barbados on Friday

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The shareholder governments of the regional airline, LIAT, will meet in Barbados on Friday, but a planned meeting in Bridgetown with Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar will not materialise, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has said. He told a news conference that his Trinidad and Tobago counterpart was unable to attend the meeting because Parliament would be meeting on the same day. LIAT shareholder governments are Antigua and Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados and Dominica.

Regional transport ministers to meet in St. Vincent

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Caribbean aviation and transport ministers meet here on Tuesday to discuss a wide range of outstanding matters including the possibility of establishing a single regional airline, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonslaves has said.
Gonsalves, speaking at a news conference, said that while his administration has no objection to the formation of a single airline to serve the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) region, such initiatives in the past have not borne fruit.

Activist resigns accusing PM of seeking to influence national heroes debate

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - Political activist and social commentator Jomo Thomas has tendered his resignation from the National Heroes Selection Committee in protest against a speech delivered on national; heroes by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves. “I am convinced that the Prime Minister’s presentation has made our work superfluous,” Thomas wrote in his resignation letter to the chair person of the Committee, Rene Baptiste, a former culture minister here.

World Bank helps to improve secondary education in St. Vincent

WASHINGTON, CMC - The World Bank says it is helping to improve the quality of secondary education in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Washington-based financial institution said this is being done through a project that trains more teachers and provides more classrooms. The bank said that, since 2004, it has supported the government in constructing and rehabilitating secondary schools creating an additional 750 school places, increasing secondary enrolment by about 30 percentage points, and provide instructional materials.

Opposition Leader says lack of confidence led to bond being under-subscribed

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace says a lack of confidence in the finances of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines government is responsible for the EC$40 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) 10-year bond issued last month being significantly undersubscribed.
Eustace said over the years, he has been complaining about the declining finances in the country.
“A lot of bills are not being paid by the government because they don’t have the cash to pay,” he said, adding that the Ralph Gonsalves government owes the private sector millions of dollars.

Gonsalves to attend Commonwealth small states meeting

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves will join leaders from across the Commonwealth’s small states at a high-level conference on governance in London from April 23 to 25. The Vincentian delegation will also include the Prime Minister’s wife, Eloise, Minister of National Reconciliation, Maxwell Charles, and Cabinet Secretary, Susan Dougan. While in London, Gonsalves is scheduled to meet Vincentians in the High Wycombe area on April 25 during a town hall meeting.

Ruling party congratulates Maduro, blasts opposition party

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The ruling Unity Labour Party (ULP) has congratulated president –elect Nicolas Maduro on his victory and has dismissed critics who point to his slim victory in Venezuela.
At least seven people were killed and 61 were injured in post-election violence across Venezuela, state media reported Tuesday.
Violence erupted in Venezuela after authorities rejected opposition candidate Henrique Capriles’ demands for a presidential election recount.

PM Gonsalves warns of increase in non-communicable diseases

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has lauded the primary and secondary health care system in St. Vincent and the Grenadines but said “developed countries diseases” continue to be a challenge.
“These are hypertension, diabetes, cardiac problems and, of course, accidents and criminal violence,” he said Monday on the Grenadine island of Bequia, where a new health centre was opened.
He said the number of citizens affected with diabetes and hypertension is “just too high.

Opposition leader says PM mismanaged economy

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace has accused Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves of bringing the Vincentian economy to its worst state since the country gained independence in 1979. In an address to the New York chapter of the New Democratic Party (NDP), on Saturday, Eustace accused the current administration of mismanaging the economy. “Let him (Gonsalves) dispute that. In 2012, to our eternal shame, St. Vincent and the Grenadines exported EC$1.1 million in bananas.

PM Gonsalves wants region-wide reparations group formed

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is calling on Caribbean countries to establish a regional reparations committee, pledging to spend the rest of his life seeking compensation from the British for land, genocide against the Garifuna, and slavery. Prime Minister Gonsalves said Cabinet will soon name its reparations committee “But we want to see not only a reparations committee for St. Vincent but we want to see a Caribbean wide reparations committee involving other Caribbean countries.
