Opposition planning action in support of arrested legislator

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) Monday said it will announce by Wednesday what action it will take in support of its member, Vynette Frederick who was arrested last Thursday. Frederick was slapped with nine charges relating to making false declarations, swearing falsely, and fabricating evidence, hours after a magistrate dismissed six charges against her. The initial charges stemmed from a private complaint that Frederick had made against Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves following the December 2010 general elections.

Opposition MP concerned about rule of law in St. Vincent

NEW YORK, CMC – In the wake of the re-arrest of an opposition senator in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, an opposition Member of Parliament has expressed grave concern about the rule of law in the country. Senator Vynette Frederick was arrested and slapped with nine charges hours after the court dismissed six charges against her on Thursday.

FAO to hire Vincentian to improve cooperation with OECS

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC - The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) will hire a Vincentian to work with them to improve cooperation with the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, made the announcement on Wednesday following a meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves. During a joint press conference on Wednesday, da Silva, who is on a two-day official visit said the FAO has agreed to have better coordination mechanisms with the OECS and will look for ways to have a common approach within the nine-member bloc.

ST. VINCENT-HEALTH- Decrease in HIV/AIDS cases attributed to prevention programme

WASHINGTON, CMC – Since the implementation of a comprehensive prevention programme, by the World Bank in 2004, health officials in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have reported a decrease in the number HIV/AIDS cases. The World Bank, in a recent report, said that between 2004 and 2010, the annual number of new HIV-positive cases in St. Vincent and the Grenadines declined by 41 percent, from a baseline of 108 to 64. During the same period, the annual number of new AIDS cases declined by 38 percent, from 40 cases to 25.

ST. VINCENT-LABOUR-Opposition leader wants full severance for Port Police workers

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace Monday called on the authorities to ensure that 84 Port Police officers, who are being sent home at the end of the month are properly compensated for their years of service.
In a letter to the officers, Eustace said that they should ensure they are compensated in accordance with the severance pay law amended last month.
Eustace said the severance pay to the workers will not take into account their first two years of employment.

FAO director general to visit St. Vincent

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva arrives here next month on a two-day visit, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has said.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines was one of two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries recognised by the FAO for significantly reducing undernourishment ahead of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) deadline and Prime Minister Gonsalves had journed to Rome to receive the award.

PM distances his administration from police position on media

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves has sought to distance his administration from a policy adopted by the police as it relates to the accreditation of media workers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
“I don't know if the press thinks that we should have some agency to do some accreditation but the truth of the matter is this, you have freedom of the press, freedom of expression in this country and freedom of expression includes freedom of the press,” Prime Minister Gonsalves said.

Airport construction costs increases significantly

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – The chief executive officer of the International Airport Development Company (IADC), Dr. Rudy Mathias, says the cost of constructing the Argyle international airport has increased by nearly EC$200 million dollars (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) since construction nearly a decade ago. Speaking on the state-owned NBC radio, Mathias said in 2004 when the first estimate had been presented, the detailed designers for the project was not available.

PM Gonsalves to attend ALBA Bank meeting in Caracas

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves is travelling to Venezuela Friday to attend a meeting of the Bolivarian Alliance for Our Americas (ALBA) Bank. “I have to be on a plane around 12 o’clock,” he told Parliament Thursday night. “There is a ministerial meeting of the ALBA Bank and I looked at the agenda and it has some great interest to me. That meeting is at 3 o’clock in Caracas in Venezuela so I will like to leave here at midday,” he said before announcing a resumption of Parliament on Friday morning at 9.a.m (local time).
