Cooperation and Integration still important – European Union Ambassador

Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Eastern Caribbean Countries, OECS and CARICOM/CARIFORUM, Ambassador Mikael Barfod said Friday was a difficult day to work out what the British exit from the European Union means and what effect it will have on the well-being of all the citizens of the European Union. He also stated that there could be some consequences for the Caribbean too, such as renegotiations of trade deals with the United Kingdom (UK). Ambassador Barfod noted that the UK is a major trading partner for many CARICOM Member States.

CARICOM Deputy Secretary General Dr. Manorma Soeknandan says that CARICOM should not go through the recent EU experience whereby the United Kingdom decided to leave that grouping. She was speaking at the opening ceremony of a Regional Technical Meeting on the implementation of 10th European Development Fund (EDF) CSME and Economic Integration Programme on Friday 24 June.

Chairman of the CARICOM Commission on the Economy advises Member States to take advantage of available concessionary funds.

Chairman of the CARICOM Commission on the Economy, Barbados Senator Darcy Boyce says it does CARICOM Member States no good when concessionary funds are allowed to go to waste. Mr. Boyce who is a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office was delivering the feature address on Friday at a CARICOM Regional Technical Meeting on the Implementation of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) CSME and Economic Integration Programme. Senator Boyce said that CARICOM economies have struggled over the last ten years and there is a tremendous amount of work to be done to overcome such hurdles.

Good family health contributes to strong economy – Premier Ewing

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos - Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands, Dr. The Honourable Rufus Ewing said last week that the Region must “go back to the family, to basics, if we are to successfully address issues such as teenage pregnancy, mental health and youth violence in the Caribbean.”

He made the point while addressing the opening ceremony of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) 61st Health Research Conference at Beaches Resort, Providenciales.

CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General calls for increased implementation of a major Financing Agreement with the European Union

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Deputy Secretary General Dr. Manorma Soeknandan is reminding CARICOM Member States of their responsibility for the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) Economic Integration Programme (EIP). This is a financing agreement signed with the European Union for over 28 million Euros of which approximately 19 million Euros is for implementing the CSME. Dr. Soeknandan was speaking at the opening ceremony for the Regional Technical Meeting on the implementation of the Agreement.

CARPHA and TCI launch TCI CARE Tourism & Health Programme

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, June 22, 2016: In a determined response to ensuring the health and safety of its visitors and residents, the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) in collaboration with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) launched the Tourism Health and Safety program (THP), under TCI CARE, on June 22 2016 at Grace Bay Club, Providenciales. Turks and Caicos is the first Caribbean country to officially launch the THP nationally, leading the way regionally for enhancing the health and safety of the tourism in this landmark event.

 

Inaction on Climate Change could lead to enormous costs for the Caribbean

Unless bold steps are taken now to eliminate the risks from Climate Change “future generations are in big trouble and for the Caribbean the trouble is massive “.
